User Removed Access For Personal Memory Information

Subject: Urgent Concern – Lack of User Access to Memory in ChatGPT

Hi OpenAI Team,

I am writing to express my strong dissatisfaction with the recent changes to ChatGPT’s memory feature, specifically the removal of direct user access and control over stored information.

It is deeply concerning and unacceptable that OpenAI has chosen to restrict visibility into the data that ChatGPT remembers about its users. Previously, users could access, review, and manage their stored memory through the settings. Now, this functionality has been removed without adequate justification or transparency, creating a serious privacy and data control issue.

This change violates fundamental user expectations of autonomy, transparency, and data control. If ChatGPT is capable of storing my personal information, I should have the right to see, manage, and delete it at will, rather than relying on vague assurances that I can ask the model to “forget” things—without any way to verify what is actually being remembered.

I demand that OpenAI immediately reinstate user access to memory settings or, at the very least, provide a clear timeline for when this feature will return. The ability to see what information an AI holds about me is not a luxury—it is a fundamental right.

Furthermore, OpenAI should publicly clarify:

  • Why this change was made.
  • Whether it was a temporary removal or a permanent decision.
  • What safeguards are in place to ensure users maintain control over their personal data.

If OpenAI truly values user trust, privacy, and transparency, then corrective action must be taken without delay. Many users, including myself, are considering alternative AI solutions if this issue is not resolved promptly.

I expect a clear and timely response on this matter.

Sincerely,
Woodsi
