Title: codex file reading tool fails

In the codex vs code extension, tool calls are not working. the models are unable to use the file read tool and cannot open any file, even when I give the exact path, I also provided the file itself, but it still cannot read it. this has been happening consistently for about two days. I first assumed it was a network issue on my side, but it keeps occurring across multiple chat interfaces.

this is a ss:

I’ve seen tool call failures in the past when an incorrect model was called - changing the model worked in that case.

I think you need to establish whether it’s a file read issue or whether it’s a general tool runner. Can you tell it to print the contents of the directory where eg.md is located?

Also it would be helpful to know what is the actual tool call failure (if you expand “Worked for 10s”).

the printing of contents directory failed
the tool call is the file read which is failing.

Ok nice. So next steps:

  • Click on “Read eg.md” - does it open successfully or throw an error, and is the error “permission denied” (then it’s a permissions issue) or something like “no such file or directory” (wrong path), or something else
  • If it’s something else you can try reloading VSCode and open a fresh new codex chat (to clear history/context) and try again
  • If that still doesn’t work, you can try running actual Codex CLI (not VSCode) and see if that works - if it does, then I would say it’s a bug with VSCode integration, and you can create an issue here.

yes, do this, the issue is going to be a lot more obvious
