I would like to propose a conceptual architecture called the Proactive Intellectual Companion (PIC).
The core idea is that the smartphone already provides the ideal platform for a persistent AI companion, with cameras, microphones, sensors, connectivity, memory, and access to advanced language models. Instead of focusing on humanoid robots, the next step in personal AI could be a smartphone-native companion that continuously supports the user’s intellectual development.
Unlike today’s reactive assistants, the PIC would build long-term memory (with user authorization), understand the user’s interests and ongoing projects, proactively identify relevant information, suggest hypotheses, detect inconsistencies, and provide meaningful insights at appropriate moments while preserving privacy and user autonomy.
This proposal is not a claim of intellectual ownership. It is an open conceptual contribution intended to encourage research and experimentation on a possible future direction for personal AI. I hope it may be useful to the OpenAI community as a topic for discussion and exploration.
