Please let us persistently attach structured reference files across sessions — it’s essential for serious users

I’ve been using ChatGPT for the past few months to help manage complex health issues — interpreting MRI results, tracking symptoms, organizing past diagnoses, prepping for doctor visits, etc. In many ways, GPT has been more helpful than any human doctor I’ve had access to. But there’s one major limitation that keeps getting in the way:

There’s no way to persistently attach a structured file to your account and have GPT reference it across chats.

I combined years of health records into a single PDF and uploaded it. GPT parsed it well — no issues. But the next day, I opened a new session and said, “you already saw my health file,” and it responded as if it had no idea what I was talking about. It asked for results that were already in the document. Only after I specifically asked it to search for a known result inside the file did it “magically” find it. That felt… off.

Eventually, I realized the file wasn’t actually “in memory.” There’s no persistent attachment, and nothing I can do to change that.

:brain: Memory ≠ Reference File

Yes, ChatGPT has a “memory” feature — but that only stores short summaries, preferences, and scattered facts. It’s not designed to handle even a basic structured case file, let alone a rich, 50-page PDF of medical history.

I’m not asking for a full-fledged personal knowledge base or vector database (though that would be amazing). I just want:

  • A way to pin a reference file to my account (PDF, Markdown, JSON, whatever)

  • So GPT can access it across sessions, and

  • I can say things like “in my file” or “based on my lab results” without re-uploading every time

This could help not just people like me dealing with chronic illness, but also:

  • Students tracking multi-term research projects

  • Lawyers or paralegals handling client documents

  • Therapists organizing case notes

  • Caregivers documenting loved ones’ treatment

:white_check_mark: What I’m suggesting:

Let users attach a structured file (or even a small set of them) to their account or to a specific thread. GPT wouldn’t have to preload the whole thing every time — just know it exists and be able to access/query it when needed.

I know there are privacy and cost considerations, but even if it were limited to 1–2 files per user, or available only to Plus/Pro subscribers, it would still be incredibly valuable.

Please consider this — GPT is already close to being life-changing for a lot of us. This one missing piece makes a massive difference.
