We’re building Agent Watch, an open-source VS Code extension that warns when two Codex sessions work on the same file. We want users to keep using the official Codex extension.
Is there a supported, read-only API that lets another VS Code extension observe the official extension’s existing, active sessions and receive their turn and fileChange events, including the session ID and final change status?
We can read about thread/list and thread/read in the App Server documentation, but stored history does not establish current activity. Starting a separate App Server also does not establish access to the official extension’s event stream. We do not want to call thread/resume merely to monitor a conversation.
We tested with VS Code 1.104.2, openai.chatgpt 26.917.62051, and codex-cli 0.155.0-alpha.16.3 on Linux. We found no declared public extension API or documented connection point for this use case.
Is this possible today through a supported interface? If not, would a read-only session event subscription be considered for a future release?
