OpenAI and Microsoft Sued by 8 Publishers

So, what do you all think of this? Not only does it affect OpenAI and Microsoft and CoPilot, but I think it will have a major impact on a vast number of GPTs out there today that use copyrighted materials.

For everyone who doesn’t want to watch some guy yap for 'bout 30 minutes about a news article with a read time of less than 2 minutes, here’s the tldr:

Eight newspaper publishers, all owned by MediaNews Group or Tribune Publishing, which both are subsidiaries of Alden global capital (hedge fund), have decided to sue OpenAI over alleged copyright infringement. The eight papers are: The New York Daily News, The Chicago Tribune, The Orlando Sentinel, The Sun Sentinel of Florida, The San Jose Mercury News, The Denver Post, The Orange County Register and The St. Paul Pioneer Press.

Eight U.S. newspaper publishers have initiated a lawsuit against Microsoft and OpenAI, claiming the companies used their articles without authorization to train AI models like ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Copilot. The publishers, which include prominent newspapers such as the New York Daily News and the Chicago Tribune, argue that these AI products incorporate and output their copyrighted content without proper permissions or compensation. They assert that this not only deprives them of potential revenue but also fails to direct users to their websites, impacting their advertising and subscription models. OpenAI responded by acknowledging their ongoing efforts to engage with news organizations worldwide to address concerns and explore collaborative opportunities. Microsoft has chosen not to comment on the matter. This lawsuit follows a similar legal challenge by The New York Times against OpenAI earlier in the year, reflecting growing tensions between news organizations and tech companies over the use of copyrighted content in AI technologies.

Shame on modern “journalists” whose primary goal is money, click-bait titles, etc. Journalism is so important for freedom which is why it’s so sad it’s been in steep decline since Watergate.

A lot of “journalists” just regurgitate from other sources or use “unnamed sources” etc.

More interesting to me maybe is why social media companies are allowed to censor yet still maintain they’re service providers and not media sites.

I believe Sports Illustrated and others got caught running un-attributed AI content already, haven’t they?
