Title: A $1 Basic Plan Could Be a Better Alternative to Ads for Free Users
I have a simple idea that I think is worth testing before relying heavily on advertising for free ChatGPT users.
Instead of showing ads to free users, why not introduce a very basic $1/month plan?
The idea would be:
- New users get free access for a limited trial period.
- After the trial, they can stay on a very limited free tier or pay $1/month for an ad-free basic experience.
- The $1 plan would have limited usage and only the essential ChatGPT features.
- Users who need more can continue upgrading to the existing higher-tier plans.
I would not recommend launching this globally immediately. Test it for one year first.
For example, run different experiments such as:
- One month free, one month paid.
- Different user groups with different offers.
- Compare the results against users who see advertisements.
Measure:
- How many free users convert to the $1 plan.
- How many continue paying after several months.
- Revenue per user compared with advertising revenue.
- Whether ads cause users to reduce their usage or leave ChatGPT.
- How many $1 users eventually upgrade to higher plans.
- Overall user retention and satisfaction.
The main point is that you don’t have to assume the idea will work — test it with real data.
A $1 subscription may look small, but at a very large user base, even a small conversion rate could create meaningful recurring revenue.
It could also provide users with a choice:
“Use ChatGPT for free with limitations, or pay $1 for a simple ad-free experience.”
I think this is worth testing alongside advertising rather than assuming advertising is automatically the better business model.
Just an idea from a ChatGPT user.
