Hi there!
I have been a paid ChatGPT user for quite a long time, especially ever since it was launched with the paid version I think. My usage of ChatGPT and AI has grown exponentially especially with regard to usage for work and business.
I have recently upgraded to ChatGPT pro as I wanted to try out the highest tier of the models - o1 Pro.
I realized it performs very differently as compared to any of the models, even as compared to o3.
I am running a business consultancy firm and I need to develop a lot of proposals, commercial contacts, business strategies. I use 4o and o3 extensively for this and it has always been helpful whenever I run my proposals via o3 for a detailed evaluation and improvements.
However when I now use o1 pro, I realize that it doesn’t give me what o3 provides but it seems to go around in circles and doesn’t seemed to really answer my question but asks so many more questions.
I am not sure if I am using it correctly or if o1 pro is the model to be used in my context.
I tried asking even basic questions and my first attempt was met with a clearly wrong answer (very basic) which both 4o and o3 never had such issues.
My thought was that o1 pro was the strongest model that could provide me with the edge as I was doing very well with 4o and o3. However it seems to be quite disappointing at least from a first or initial impression.
Its information seems very outdated and it is unable to identify latest information unlike o3.
It seems like o3 is the best at least in my own experience as o1 Pro seems wonky or I maybe using it wrongly.
However paying USD$218 (we have to pay 9% more tax here), it’s really a very heavy monthly investment for something that doesn’t really give me the added edge that I need.
It’s to my current impression that if it can’t even get simple answers right (which 4o and o3 have no issues with), how can it handle complicated stuff like stress testing business proposals, deeper research on new sectors and overseas employment legislations?
Thank you!
Open AI support has reverted and I would like to share the response which is helpful:
Hi there,
Thank you for getting in touch with OpenAI support and for sharing your experience with o1 Pro.
We understand how important it is to have reliable and effective tools for your consultancy work—especially when developing proposals, contracts, and strategic materials. We’d like to provide you with more information about the available models so you can choose the one that best suits your tasks.
o1 Pro is designed for advanced reasoning and is particularly effective in scenarios requiring deep analysis. It often takes a more exploratory approach, which can include asking clarifying questions. This may feel different from the more structured and direct responses you might be used to with models like o3 or GPT-4o. While o1 Pro performs strongly in fields such as legal reasoning, research, and engineering, it may not be the most efficient choice for tasks that require fast, clearly structured outputs—like business proposals or strategy evaluations.
Here are a few points to consider when deciding which model to use:
- Use Case Suitability: For tasks involving structured feedback, business planning, or clear strategy development, o3 or GPT-4o may be better aligned with your needs due to their more concise and direct response style.
- Handling Complex Challenges: If you’re working on intricate, layered issues that benefit from deep exploration, o1 Pro may offer value—though it may require more iterative interaction to reach the desired result.
- Targeted Testing: You might try using o1 Pro for tasks involving brainstorming, hypothesis testing, or ambiguous problem-solving, where its depth can be most useful.
If o1 Pro doesn’t meet your expectations, continuing to use o3 or GPT-4o is a strong alternative. Both are well-suited for business use cases that require clarity, speed, and structure.
We appreciate your feedback on o1 Pro and will share it with the team for review. For more details about our models, you can also refer to this Help Center article: What is the ChatGPT model selector?
We hope you understand and thank you for your patience.
