New ChatGPT Desktop has significant feature regressions compared to ChatGPT Web and Classic

ChatGPT Desktop Feedback – Critical Regression & Missing Features

Overview

Hi OpenAI Team,

First, I’d like to say that I actually support the direction of
merging Codex into ChatGPT
. Having coding, agents, and chat in one
application makes a lot of sense in the long term.

However, after using the new ChatGPT Desktop extensively, I feel that it
has been released before reaching feature parity with ChatGPT Web and
ChatGPT Classic
.

At the moment, the experience feels more like an early preview than a
replacement for the existing desktop application.

1. GPT-5.6 is only available in the new Desktop

Client GPT-5.6 Mature User Experience

As a Plus user, I am forced to choose between: - The newest model - The
most complete application

This shouldn’t be a tradeoff.

2. Major Feature Regressions

Compared with ChatGPT Web and ChatGPT Classic, the new Desktop is
missing many features that are already part of my daily workflow.

Missing capabilities include:

  • Projects

  • Library

  • GPTs / GPT Store

  • Images

  • Several mature chat interactions

These aren’t new feature requests.

These are existing capabilities that disappeared after switching to the
new Desktop.

3. Critical Chat Regression

Reproduction

  1. Type a long message.

  2. Accidentally press Send.

  3. Immediately click Stop.

  4. Try to edit the message.

Expected

The message should remain editable.

This already works in: - ChatGPT Web - ChatGPT Classic

Actual

The message becomes non-editable.

This is a clear regression that significantly affects daily usage.

4. Desktop No Longer Matches Web

Previously, ChatGPT Desktop was essentially a native version of ChatGPT
Web.

Now, Desktop feels like a completely different product with fewer
capabilities.

Instead of becoming more powerful, it currently feels significantly less
complete.

5. Workflow Disruption

Previous workflow:

Projects → Chat → Upload files → Generate images → Library → Continue
conversations

Current workflow:

Desktop ↔ Web ↔ ChatGPT Classic

I constantly switch between applications to accomplish tasks that used
to be available in one place.

6. Suggestions

Before replacing ChatGPT Classic, please prioritize feature parity with
ChatGPT Web.

Priority list:

  1. Restore Projects

  2. Restore Library

  3. Restore GPTs

  4. Restore Images

  5. Restore mature chat editing behaviors

  6. Eliminate regressions before introducing new workflows

Final Thoughts

I really like GPT-5.6.

It is currently my favorite model.

Unfortunately, the new Desktop application doesn’t yet match the quality
and completeness of the model itself.

Right now, it feels like I have to choose between:

  • The best model

  • The best user experience

I hope future updates can combine both into a single application.

Closing

Please don’t make long-time users feel like upgrading means losing
features. Upgrades should make workflows better, not require users to
abandon mature functionality they rely on every day.

Hi @Echo_Zuo, thank you for taking the time to document this feedback in detail.

The new ChatGPT desktop app does not currently have full feature parity with ChatGPT Web or ChatGPT Classic. Differences such as the availability of Projects, GPTs, Library, Images, and some chat workflows are best considered current product limitations or feature-parity gaps rather than individual regressions. ChatGPT Classic can also remain installed and used alongside the new app; migration is not required at launch.

However, the behavior where a message can no longer be edited after immediately pressing Stop may be a separate regression. If you can reproduce it consistently, please submit feedback from the affected conversation using /feedback in the desktop app and share the Feedback ID, along with your operating system, app version, and reproduction steps. This will include the diagnostic information needed for further investigation.

We appreciate the detailed comparison and will pass the broader feature-parity feedback along to the appropriate team.
