I want to propose a feature request that I have been craving for a while. I am a firm believer that organization increases productivity. The addition of projects was much needed, but it is just the tip of the iceberg regarding improved chat organization. That said, I am requesting the addition of nested folders (subfolders) inside Projects.
Currently, Projects only allow users to organize documents and conversations in a flat list.
As Projects grow, staying organized becomes increasingly complex, especially when managing 20, 50, or even 100+ documents.
The ability to create folders and subfolders (multi-level organization) would make a massive difference for power users tracking complex workstreams.
Ideally, users would be able to:
Create a folder tree structure inside Projects
Drag and drop documents into folders/subfolders
Collapse and expand folders for cleaner navigation
This would align with the kind of workspace experience many users are familiar with. It would be similar to traditional file management systems (e.g., Windows File Explorer, Mac Finder) but optimized for AI-driven workflows.
If anyone else feels this would help, please like, reply, and/or save this post. Thanks.
Absolutely agree — this feature would be a game-changer for power users.
As someone managing multiple layered workflows, I’ve quickly run into the limits of the current flat structure. A nested folder system would vastly improve clarity, reduce cognitive overhead, and allow for true project architecture — especially for those of us working across disciplines or time horizons.
The ability to build a collapsible folder tree, just like any serious IDE or file manager, is essential for scaling productivity. It’s not just about convenience — it’s about enabling serious, sustained work inside this platform.
+1 for:
Folder tree hierarchy
Drag-and-drop support
Collapsible UI
Seamless integration with documents, chats, and canvases
I hope the team prioritizes this — the current system is functional, but this upgrade would unlock the next level of structured thinking in AI-assisted work.
Is anyone watching this from @OpenAI_Support ? I would love more organization within projects. Or maybe “Project Specific” archiving? Archived conversations in a project could be tucked away somewhere easily accessible within the project.
Dear Open Ai Team,
I absolutely love using ChatGPT and rely on it daily to manage teaching, projects, and research. Chatgpt could easily replace my other project management and personal knowledge management apps if this feature among other PKM features are implemented. I would quickly say goodbye to apps like Notion and Obsidian if not for this one limitation I’ve run into which is chat organization. Right now, folders are extremely helpful, but I often need to group related folders together. For example, I might want a main folder for “Teaching” and subfolders inside it for “Curriculum,” “Assessments,” and “Professional Development.”
Please add support for nested folders (folders within folders). This would make information management much smoother, especially for users like me who handle many different projects and need structured organization!
