Naming Convention for GPT-4.0

Dear OpenAI Community,

I am writing to provide feedback regarding the naming convention used for your latest model, GPT-4.0. I have noticed inconsistencies in the way the model is referred to, specifically the use of “GPT-4.o” instead of “GPT-4.0”.

Issue:

The inconsistent use of “GPT-4.o” has caused confusion among users who are trying to understand and reference your latest model accurately.

Impact:

This inconsistency can lead to misunderstandings and miscommunication among users, potentially affecting their perception of the product.

Suggestion:

Ensure consistent use of the correct designation “GPT-4.0” across all platforms and communications to maintain clarity and avoid any potential confusion.

I believe that addressing this issue will enhance the user experience and help maintain the high standards of communication associated with OpenAI.

Thank you for taking the time to consider my feedback. I appreciate your efforts in advancing AI technology and look forward to seeing the continued improvements.

Best regards,
Sk. Sabbir Hossen

You seem to be confused. There is no model called “GPT-4.o” or “GPT-4.0”.

There is “GPT-4”, and there is “GPT-4o” (no dot). These are two different models.

It’s a “o”, not a zero, because it stands for omni, since the model was trained on text, audio, and images all at once.

The timeline is as follows:

  • GPT
  • GPT-2
  • GPT-3
  • GPT-3.5
  • GPT-4 (not GPT-4.0)
  • GPT-4o
  • o1 (a different series of models entirely)
