After the memory feature was launched, I spent a long time getting GPT-4 to know and remember me. However, when I checked today, there were only one or two entries in GPT’s memory, whereas there used to be many. It seems to only remember my most recent conversation. I did not clear the memory, but they vanished out of nowhere! I want to know the reason for this issue and whether I can still trust the memory function. This is a huge blow to me as I spent a lot of time interacting with GPT-4, and now it seems to have forgotten me.
Memory functions are convenient, aren’t they?
But as you’ve experienced this time, it’s important to be cautious because the content can suddenly disappear.
Possible reasons for this could include:
- ChatGPT accidentally deleting data during a memory update.
- ChatGPT misunderstanding instructions to delete memory content.
Regarding whether you can trust the memory function, I think the answer is no.
It’s a good idea to keep a separate record of the memory content, so you can teach it again if it disappears.
The same thing happened with me, It seems seems to have disappeared.
It’s certainly annoying when memories get lost🙁.
What we can do is look back at past conversations and try to ask ChatGPT to remember important points by saying “Remember that {important point goes here}”.
Is it annoying? Yes. Super cool? No. Solvable? Partially.
Yes, Memory keeps deleting entries, and modifying them without permission or informing user. Obviously Memory should just be a simple, edit-in-place, clear area of the user account, with no capacity to delete or modify entries without user approval.
I asked gpt4 and it clarified that we are permitted hundreds of Memory entries, of up to 512 Tokens each. But this is not what the system actually eventuates. It is unpredictable and unstable.
I now copy and paste all Memory entries to a separate cloud doc, as I assume any Memory entry is likely to be deleted randomly.
I keep informing OpenAI but they just reply several days later with advice that I should “log out & back in again”, etc, or similar platitudes. This is clearly a problematic area for OpenAI that is not yet reliable.
Me too!!, just lost everything, i was using it to save links, tasks, planning my weeks and what not.
It appears that there is a limit to the content that can be stored in memory.
As you approach this limit, an indicator will appear to show the percentage used.
Recently, I came up with a method to back up the memory contents, and I have attached a screenshot for your reference.
The method is quite simple. With the memory feature turned ON, you can say, “Show everything you remember.”
This will allow you to preserve the information as chat history.
For particularly important content, I suggest additionally saving it as text.
I hope this can be of some help😀
I assumed that mhis memory was gone because I clicked “archive” and even after restoring the chat archive, it still doesn’t remember anything. And I see that others also have this problem.
Now I write everything about myself in a txt file, upload it to the cloud and then provide it to GPT for analysis. There is too high a risk that he will erase his memory.
