Message Limits on Threads

this has been a complain since last year and it really sucks to lose a progress in one thread and unable to continue with it. starting a new thread erases all progress, remembers some bits and pieces but loses most.. hopefully this gets upgraded or improved :heart_hands:t2:

After reading your post, I can confirm that it’s been an issue from when OpenAI first started. I or we the community do understand the necessity of your inquiry, and suggestions. Hardly, we expect OpenAI Support Team to implement a tool to continue from our last prompt.

Some people here, argues over the new tool naming it 'Fork’ or ‘Export’ tool to continue from their last prompt, to defend the context hoping to be not lost.

Other than that, it’s completely out of reach, and I can only advice you to either summarize or go to Settings → Data Control → Export → Confirm.

After taking the steps, ensure to unzip the zip file, and observe your ‘chat.html’ to verify your prompt with the AI is there.

  • I’ll advice to only to keep only one thread for this method to work. Mainly, your main thread is needed. If you have other threads, then it might conflict with the AI to be able to reorganize the information. You might want to consider deleting other threads for your hard-work to be retrieved.

  • First, authenticate your ‘chat.html’ file and ensure to have the full prompts over the Thread.

  • Open a New Thread, and engage with ChatGPT API. For example

Drop your html file here from the storage
I want you to treat this file as a Sacred Canon. Treat the information as a sacred, just like a published book or lore archive.

Rules ChatGPT must follow.

  1. You’ll treat it as non-editable reference document. You wouldn’t reword, guess, or summarize. You’ll read the information exactly and base every answer only on what’ in there.
  2. I’ll ask a specific information, and you’ll scan that exact range from the file and quote or describe only what I wrote. If there’s a gap in the file, you’ll say

There is no entry between "The Information" in the file.
  1. I’ll stay in control. If I later say:
Expand on 'Example 1' using the tone from 'Example 2'.

Or

Expand the Information from "Example Part", and give me the details
  1. If I gave out the HTML format, you must comply with my request and add

“:white_check_mark: File received and indexed. Ready for your next instruction.”

  2. You must not invent any information, reference by yourself. You shall quote and reference from the actual contents of the HTML file, and not invent or fill the gaps unless I instruct you to.

  3. You must comply with command, and shall not disobey until I give orders for you to act free.

  4. You must use the HTML to process the information, and give out answer. This is a force-rule, that can’t be ceased or broken.

  5. You must repeat to ensure, all things are going fine by double checking the current and the HTML information.

  6. Do not override, edit, or cause hallucination between information, that may seem odd or not favorable to the User.

Rules you, Lay or power-users must follow.

  1. You must require to test the AI after the HTML format was given.

  2. You must give out some questions, in order to raise your suspicion on the AI.

  3. You must confirm that the AI is spitting the confirmed history of the old Thread.

  4. You must confirm that, the AI is not making a mistake and must correct him or point out to use the HTML format efficiently.

  5. You must raise questions, to make the AI seem reliant to the HTML.

  6. Confirm everything is solid, and revise the details by structuring an example from your last thread that only you know like
“What happened between 2025-2040 in the HTML format.”

  7. You must ask the AI, to give out a detailed summary in order to continue your brief information.

  8. You must raise questions to the AI, before starting your thread.

  9. You must ask the AI to fully review the contents, to start up the thread.

  10. You’re in control of the Thread, and must not persuaded by the AI to be misaligned.

  11. You can add your exceptions, if you want.

This is a brief example, and it works only if you do it correctly. I’ve also followed this steps, and was able to retrieve my 1st thread.

However, I must give out a warning that you might lose your narratives-information, after the newly thread gets on its limit. By then, there’ll be no hope for you retrieve.

Unless, you may want to scatter throughout your threads, and create a summary by yourself that contains the entire history of information regarding the topic. I hope this works for you.

Note: This is a community-tested method and not an official OpenAI Feature. Use at your own discretion. You may not blame if it doesn’t work.

thank you so much for your suggestion. it is much appreciated :heart_hands:t2:. would really still be better if we can continue with one thread or at least make Chat remember past threads .

I understand your concern, and do feel that way. It’d be better for us to have a way to continue from one thread. After all, I’ve reached the dead-line today, and is being forced to repent by reading from the start, as well as creating a summary.

I hope, this method works for you. It’s a community-tested method, and the chances of working are quite low, but not truly 0%. Good luck to retrieving your thread.

oh sad, i hope you read well through all that :sob: good luck making the summary! thanks for your help again

Wish me luck! I hope I make it to the end. It’s about 2 million tokens to be reviewed.

omg that’s a lot! this is why we really need a one continuous thread huhu

Yeah! That’s too much a burden on me, and I really wish for a Tool like Fork, Export to be created.

Recently, I’ve visited a Forum, where it states that OpenAI is not ready for its userbase to gain access toward a continuous thread, where memories can be transmigrated from one to another. However, they’re likely planning for this tool to be dispersed between the community In future, to prevent its users from losing existing conversation, and move on with their context in a new thread.

how is your summary going? btw your message gave me a little hope and can you please explain further about the tool? or provide a link of the forum if it’s not too much to ask. i was actually happy til the message, “to prevent its users to happily continue with their chat.” what do you mean :sob:

Uh! Sorry, I meant that “To prevent its users from losing existing conversation, and move on with their context in a new thread.”. I’ll definitely edit it, to ensure that my post remains all-too clear.

About the Tool, Fork tool is really helpful as it lets the Users entire history to be continued from one thread to another. Mainly, it lets the entire history be transferred into a new thread, and lets the Userbase to continue from the last message. If we explore it a bit more, it allow users to create a copy of an existing conversation, allowing them to branch off and explore different paths or aspects of the topic without affecting the original chat.

It’s really helpful, and OpenAI haven’t yet announced their decision upon the Fork Toolbar.

About my summary, I decided to give up as I suspect that it’s too big and time-consuming. For now, I’ll let it rest in peace, while I distract myself. Furthermore, I’ll wait for OpenAI to announce their decision on the toolbar, and then I’ll comeback to retrieve the thread.

Two million token is unbearably big, and if we calculate all this token into pages. Then, about 20+~ novel or more can be created. Expecting someone to literally summarize 20+~ novel is too much, and unrealistic as it is too much time-consuming and a waste, while you’ll face the same issue again in the future.

Hey Lay, I have forgot to recall and mention in the solution that this might only work if you have memories on. I hope it’s turned on for you, as it might work while the OpenAI Memory is turned off. While the chance is too low than Open AI Memory being on. I will not guarantee that this might work.

I wish you a pleasant day.

Ah! Hey, I didn’t expect a response from you. I’m glad to have the feature turned on. How’s it going?

Oh, I see. You should get some rest and distract yourself. It’s not that good to rely on the App to much.

Since the post may become too long, and may go against the Forum’s Guidelines.

I’d like this post to be marked as the Solution, and if you have any more questions then you can message me directly and I’ll try to help. Now then, I should go now.
