I’d really like to see OpenAI reconsider the current weekly usage limits for Codex, especially for paying Plus and Pro subscribers.
I’m currently subscribed to ChatGPT Plus ($20/month), and I’ve recently started using Codex through PowerShell to help develop script mods for games like inZOI. While Codex has been incredibly useful, I was pretty disappointed to discover that I only had 9% of my weekly usage remaining, despite having only recently started working with it.
I understand that running AI coding models requires significant computing resources, and I’m certainly not expecting unlimited usage for everyone. However, I do think the current weekly restrictions could be improved, particularly for users who rely on Codex for larger or more complicated projects.
Here’s what I’d personally like to see improved:
Higher weekly usage limits for Plus subscribers: Paying $20/month should provide enough usage to work on coding projects regularly without having to constantly worry about exhausting the allowance.
Significantly higher limits for Pro subscribers: Considering Pro starts at $100/month, I believe those subscribers should receive substantially more coding capacity.
Shorter reset periods: Instead of having to wait an entire week, I’d like to see daily resets or a system that gradually restores usage throughout the week.
Better usage tracking: Show users exactly how much usage each session or task consumes, so we can better understand what’s using our allowance.
More efficient usage for troubleshooting: Codex shouldn’t consume an excessive amount of someone’s weekly allowance simply because it needs multiple attempts to identify or fix an issue.
My biggest concern is that users working on complicated projects could potentially exhaust their allowance in just a few sessions, leaving them unable to continue until the following week unless they purchase additional credits or upgrade.
I personally don’t think paying subscribers should feel pressured to upgrade to a significantly more expensive plan just to continue working on their projects.
Again, I’m not asking OpenAI to eliminate usage limits entirely. I understand why they’re necessary. However, I genuinely believe there should be a better balance between managing computing resources and providing reasonable allowances to paying customers.
Codex has a lot of potential, especially for independent developers, hobbyists, and game modders like myself. I’d really appreciate it if the OpenAI development team could consider increasing the weekly allowances and making the reset system more flexible in a future update.
