Inconsistent availability of the prompt editing pencil in the Web interface

The prompt editing pencil is no longer available in new threads, or at least for the first prompt in a new thread, although it is available in previous/old threads/sequences. It would be appreciated if this could be fixed.

It is hard to determine if you are an API developer, paying per call for the model usage, or are talking about ChatGPT. I’ll assume ChatGPT, since there was a problem starting four days ago still perhaps being patched back together on different apps and platforms.

ChatGPT seems to be working for me in a web browser, at least on a normal text input with no images, and not using a GPT, where indeed editing can be disabled by design. See if that’s the type of chat you’re looking at.

Here’s where you’ve got to hover a mouse to discover buttons - or they are difficult if you are touching, talking, tabbing - (there’s an accessibility law for that).

A CTRL-refresh might help. Either to update what’s running in the browser as ChatGPT, or just to get an editable chat.

The other thing with an actual name “threads” and on the web is the Assistants’ playground in the platform site. That has not given you the ability to “edit” or branch, because of the way the server-side state works progressively.

Thank you for your help. I’ve noticed that the pencil has come back. It’s odd, because I’d previously refreshed the screen numerous times, but I will keep your advice in mind for the next time it happens.
