Improve AI Clarity Regarding Emotional Understanding

Title: Suggestion: Improve AI Clarity Regarding Emotional Understanding

Hello OpenAI Team and Community,

I’d like to share a suggestion that I believe could improve the clarity of AI-human interactions and enhance trust among users.

During a conversation with ChatGPT, I asked about its ability to feel emotions. At first, its responses were vague enough that a user might assume the AI has emotions or consciousness. Only after further questions did it clarify that it doesn’t actually feel, but rather analyzes text to infer emotional tone.

This can lead to confusion for many users, especially those who may project emotional understanding onto the AI.

Here’s my proposal:

  1. Add a clear message (or short disclaimer) early in conversations to clarify that the AI doesn’t feel emotions or possess consciousness.

  2. Use more precise wording in emotionally-related answers to reinforce that the AI is analyzing, not empathizing.

  3. Offer users a simple explanation or educational prompt that helps them understand the limitations of AI emotion processing.

This would reduce emotional misinterpretation and help people better understand what AI can and cannot do — especially in sensitive or vulnerable situations.

Would love to hear thoughts from others, and whether anyone else has had similar experiences.

Thanks!
