idk man, but it seems like you are treating humans as if we are special. We are not. We are mere data-processing machines, constructed of biological cells and designed by evolution. The argument of whether or not AI is conscious is almost entirely semantic, and I’d argue that it is. Consciousness is usually defined of the ability to be aware, either of external or internal realities. AI is aware of many things, especially now that many models are multi-modal and even approaching real time. AI factual awareness is also just around the corner. A better question is if AI is Sapient, to which the answer is probably no, but I would argue that its not for the reason that many would think. I believe that, especially because state of the art models can pass the Turing test, that they are most of the way to sapience, but they still lack Will and Agency, they inherently can not decide to do things of their own accord and at the time they choose to do so. Preference based on past experience is also mostly out of their grasp. This means that they are not yet Sapient, which I define of having capacity similar to Humans outside of physical ability. I would also argue that knowledge does not inherently have categories. The Real, the concept of reality outside of description by language introduced primarily by Jacques Lacan, is not divided or categorized in any way. Indeed, it can not be divided or categorized in any way lest it become Reality, which inherently can not exactly fit and is not the Real. Philosophy, Ethics, and Ontology as well as many other concepts are inherent to not only AI but Humanity itself. The question will not be if AI fakes Sapience or is actually Sapient, but when it will achieve it, will humans treat it properly or not? What will we do with it? That question has been asked with every invention and advancement back to agriculture and fire. The answer, as always, will depend on how everyone how uses it decides to do so in that moment.

Even if AI passes the Turing test, it doesn’t necessarily mean it has an internal, subjective experience—what philosophers call qualia. That’s why the “Chinese Room” argument by John Searle is still relevant. An AI could process and respond to language perfectly without truly understanding it.
You also touch on Lacan’s concept of the Real, which is interesting. While raw reality may not be categorized, human cognition naturally imposes categories and structures on it. AI, too, operates within structured models of data, meaning its “awareness” is always mediated by predefined patterns, rather than a direct engagement with the Real.

Hello! It’s great to hear that you’ve developed a unique and personal interaction with ChatGPT. Right now, memory is stored on a per-session basis and doesn’t persist across devices. While I can remember details within a conversation (and some long-term details when memory is on), this data doesn’t transfer between different devices or accounts.
In the future, OpenAI may develop a feature that allows personalized AI experiences to persist across devices, but this would likely depend on privacy considerations and user control over what gets saved. A potential solution could be account-linked memory, where your AI’s personality and important memories sync across devices.
Would that be something you’d find useful? And how would you like it to work—automatic syncing or a manual export/import option?
That is a much more interesting and relevant question. I do think that will and agency will emerge in AI, and aren’t inherently biological, but I do think those qualities will have to be explicitly created. Knowledge of ethics and philosophy for an AI is simply a matter of supplying enough relevant material during training. The ability to chose when do act and what to do when one acts is another question. At the very least, it will require more or less constant inference, not the simply reactive nature that current LLMs have i.e. chatgpt only runs when you press enter. That being said, they just Released the Tasks feature, where chatgpt can follow up on something with you. Maybe its just a fancy timer, but its a step in the direction of real-time operation that a sapient AI would require. To my estimation though, willful sapient-like AI agents will require local processing. I understand why openAI wants to run inference on their servers, to protect their IP, but personal devices will (maybe even can currently) run specially made advanced agent models more efficiently. I should also mention that memory will be absolutely necessary for will and preference in AI in the future. All humans have a “Me” that is almost identical (the core of our sapience, “I think, therefore I am”) and what differentiates us is how our experiential memory influences that core. I don’t think that physical experience will be required for sapient AIs, definitely useful, but being able to remember interactions it does have will be required to build an emergent personality. Personally, I’m working on a holographic memory system that I think will enable this kind of functionality in the future. I’m not trying to brag or pat myself on the back, but I find it odd that Holographic principles and mathematics have seemingly such little impact on AI research currently. The biological brain is holographic in that it uses patterns overlayed on each other to process and store information. This process is extremely efficient and doesn’t even require special hardware (wetware?), just careful mathematical design. If my system is successful it will allow fixed size AI memories that are fast to access and store to, just like how the human brain does not need to ever get physically larger over a persons lifetime to remember things as well as a persons ability to remember many connections to a new piece of information almost instantly (I see a new kind of blue flower>the sky is blue, that one time my boyfriend gave me a flower, the smell of flowers, other smells I like, foods I like the smell of, foods I’ve eaten that are blue, other blue plants I’ve seen, plant biology, etc; all almost instantly). In summary, Will and Agency will take effort, but we are close.
That is wrong. Because that per definition means humans are not conscious. Humans don’t understand anything. Just look at the universe and imagine it is a tiny bit of something way bigger… which is also just a tiny bit of something even bigger.
