The OpenAI API playground itself is only for demonstration of techniques.
I can give the AI a function that it will call if it seems useful for satisfying the user input, which will be emitted back to the code of the developer. This function can ask to get the weather from an API - or to use another API, such as the code you have written to call upon the API version of DALL-E.
The AI has output a tool call needing a response, following the generate_image function specification schema that was input in the chat playground “function”.
The playground can only show you what a function call would look like, and how the AI would respond when you type in the simulated function call return as response like I did.
You can see I’d need to write significantly more code: actually making the API call, downloading the image generated by DALL-E, storing it on my server for user download, displaying it in a user interface. Then checking the user’s credits and rate limit budget for getting images in my own payment system, etc.
DALL-E 3 on API starts at $0.04 per image. DALL-E is only an API service, not AI code that you can run. AI in general requires high specification computation if you were to run other open-source image generation tools.
You can look at “Documentation” quickstart and “API Reference” links on the sidebar of the forum, to see if developing a chatbot that can use functions and the OpenAI API is within your programming skill set.
If you just want a tool that can accept a prompt to send to the DALL-E API and returns an image, you likely don’t need to chat with an AI about it.
