If I made an API Assistant with files and Retrieval enabled, then I used it once a week, will I be charged $0.20/GB every day? If yes then how can I stop the charging when I don’t use the Assistant?
An “assistant” in the assistants endpoint that has files attached will incur the daily charge - for each assistant. Therefore, even though if it were actually using embeddings it would cost more to OpenAI, for you to save money, you would disengage the files from the assistant after use, or even delete the assistant to scorch the Earth.
The only drawback with re-uploading is the unknown and unmeasurable and unpollable time delay for uploaded files to be extracted before they can be used, besides the network upload time, all which can delay a user answer (which will already seem delayed using this framework because of the AI going off in random directions making file browser tool calls that may or may not find anything useful)

You will be able to log into your platform.openai.com usage page and see what you’ve already been being charged for typical use, even if it was paid for by previous free credits.
