French is adding extra space before punctuation

This is only happening in French for the API for me. When I generate similar sentences in other languages I don’t get the same problem.

Bonjour et bienvenue ! Qu’est-ce que je peux vous servir aujourd’hui ?

This happens for every exclamation point and question mark in every French sentence.

Any idea what’s happening here?

This is the way we write in french.
Before (and after) what we call “double signs” ( : ; ! ? ), there is always a space. Probably the only latin language that has that typographic rule.
