Formal Complaint to OpenAI - Image Generation

Formal Complaint to OpenAI

Greetings OpenAI Community Staff,

I am writing to submit a formal complaint regarding ongoing harassment and escalating misconduct within the OpenAI Developer Community Discourse and related OpenAI community spaces.

Recently, after a period of inactivity, I became active again in the OpenAI Developer Community Discourse, specifically in discussions related to image generation. This area is of significant interest to me on both personal and professional levels.

I became active in the current prominent image-generation thread after being encouraged to participate by the original poster of that thread, who appeared to be making efforts to bring together individuals with relevant skills and interests. At first, the thread seemed to be a welcoming and constructive community space.

However, the original poster’s behavior has since shifted significantly. This shift has included what I experience as direct harassment, both in public-facing interactions and in direct bilateral communication. The situation escalated to the point where moderators were notified, and posts made by the original poster were removed.

Following this, the behavior escalated further. The original poster began using the capabilities of GPT Image 2 as a model to continue this conduct in another form. This required additional intervention from moderation leadership. I was advised to use the ignore functionality within Discourse to limit further interaction.

After I made use of that functionality, the original poster continued the behavior on the OpenAI Discord server. This also escalated to the point where moderation teams across both Discourse and Discord had to communicate with one another regarding the situation.

Despite the use of available avoidance and ignore tools, the original poster has continued to appeal to the broader community in ways that appear intended to isolate, veto, or oust a specific user. This has created an increasingly hostile and unprofessional environment.

At this point, the conduct of the original poster — particularly as someone leading or representing a major image-generation discussion thread — is no longer consistent with the standards of a healthy, inclusive, or professional community. A thread concerning image generation should be welcoming to all types of users, including casual users, Free-tier ChatGPT users, Pro-tier users, developers using the API, artists, researchers, and individuals with a wide range of image-related goals, philosophies, and use cases.

No user, regardless of their ideas, creative direction, philosophy, or goals related to images or AI more broadly, should be subjected to harassment, exclusionary appeals, or targeted attempts to remove them from community participation.

This letter is therefore a formal complaint requesting that OpenAI Community Staff review this matter and take appropriate action to stop this behavior across all relevant OpenAI community spaces.

Harassment at any level, especially within the AI community, should not be tolerated. I strongly reject this conduct and request that it be addressed with the seriousness it warrants.

Should this behavior continue without meaningful intervention, I will consider escalating the matter directly through OpenAI’s formal support or reporting channels.

Best regards,

Dys

What action do you believe is required to put this matter to rest?

And what is the action that has been taken that the ignore feature has not been able to prevent?

Hi, thank you for replying and delisting the thread.

I previously posted this on our previous exchange

This kind of behavior is seen across the version history of different posts made by Windy. This can be seen when looking at the edit version history functionality Discourse has.

The recurring topic is manipulation, not belonging to the community, and indirect messages tailored for other users. This is in the form of plaintext and in the form of messages found in the images using the GPT Image 2 text capabilities. Also to be included the symbolic non-textual images that also include this as visual semantic.

This, as an hypothetical would fall to any user that doesn’t align in full to what Windy wants at any given time and task.

I’m no person to demand actions from the moderation staff that are edge-limiting and could exclude an user. This is where I appeal to your expertise as moderator.

The only thing I would see as a next step to consider is a time-out for a few days up to a week. But by doing so, this would probably expand the situation to Discord again.

At this point I do not know what else to do, and requesting a ban for Windy would be contradicting what Iˋm stating in the complaint.

This is out of my domain and competence. Also do not know the extent of internal moderation guidelines.

So, this falls back to the moderation staff to normalize the situation and regain healthy thread(s).
