I’m frustrated with the way OpenAI is treating its free users in 2026.
My concerns are:
- Unreasonably restrictive usage limits: The free model has become increasingly limited, making it difficult to use ChatGPT consistently for everyday tasks, learning, and productivity.
- Image upload restrictions: Users should be able to upload a reasonable number of images without constantly hitting limitations. Image uploads are essential for explaining problems, sharing screenshots, learning, and getting assistance.
- Document upload restrictions: Limiting PDF, DOCX, and other document uploads interrupts workflows, especially when users need help analysing resumes, projects, study materials, and other documents.
- Pressure to purchase subscriptions: The overall experience increasingly feels like free users are being pushed towards expensive paid plans. Instead of making the free experience genuinely useful, restrictions make users feel that upgrading is the only practical solution.
- Poor experience for students and job seekers: Many people depend on ChatGPT for learning, interview preparation, career guidance, coding assistance, and job applications. Frequent restrictions interrupt these activities.
- Free users deserve respect: Free users are still users. They contribute to the platform’s growth, adoption, and popularity. They shouldn’t feel like second-class customers simply because they cannot afford a subscription.
What I want OpenAI to understand:
I understand that running advanced AI models requires significant resources and that paid subscriptions have their place.
However, there’s a difference between offering additional benefits to paying customers and making the free experience unnecessarily restrictive.
My expectation isn’t unlimited free access. My expectation is reasonable access to essential features without constantly being interrupted or pressured into purchasing a subscription.
OpenAI should reconsider its free-tier limitations, particularly image uploads, document uploads, and overall usage limits.
