Feedback on Moderation Policies for AI-Generated Artistic Imagery

Hello OpenAI Team,

I appreciate the effort to maintain responsible and safe content policies for AI-generated imagery; however, I’d like to highlight a critical issue with the current moderation policies related to artistic expression.

Specifically, the moderation system appears overly restrictive regarding:

  • Depictions of emotional distress or harm, even when clearly symbolic or metaphorical.
  • Facial distortion used artistically to explore psychological or emotional themes.
  • Identity masks and imagery associated with psychological struggle, duality, or inner turmoil.

These elements are fundamental to art and crucial for authentically expressing the full spectrum of human emotions and experiences. Restricting such imagery inadvertently implies that certain complex emotions or internal struggles are inappropriate or taboo, potentially hindering mindfulness, emotional healing, and genuine personal expression.

Art historically serves as a powerful medium for exploring, confronting, and understanding challenging emotional experiences. Moderation systems should differentiate more effectively between genuinely harmful content and meaningful artistic symbolism.

I encourage reconsideration or fine-tuning of these moderation guidelines to better support artistic creativity, emotional honesty, and the therapeutic potential inherent in expressive art.

Thank you for considering this perspective.

Warm regards, Fae McLachlan
