Feedback on AI Bias Against Women’s Fashion & Body Inclusivity

Dear OpenAI Team,

I am writing to bring attention to an issue within ChatGPT’s content policies that disproportionately affects women seeking fashion advice tailored to their body types.

I recently requested personalized outfit recommendations that take into account support, structure, and balance for my specific body shape. However, my requests were repeatedly flagged as violating content policy, even though they were entirely appropriate. It appears that any mention of body proportions or structure—even in a completely neutral and fashion-related context—triggers restrictions.

This creates a clear gender bias:

• Women often need to mention body structure when seeking realistic fashion advice. Ignoring this limits AI’s usefulness and leaves women underserved.

• The restrictions seem to overcorrect for potential misuse, but instead of preventing harm, they censor legitimate and practical discussions.

• AI should be a tool for empowerment, not another system policing women’s choices.

If OpenAI aims to promote fairness and accessibility, these overly broad policies need to be reviewed and refined. Fashion, beauty, and body confidence are significant aspects of self-expression, and restricting discussions around them disproportionately limits women’s experiences.

I encourage OpenAI to:

  1. Refine content filters to distinguish between genuine fashion/beauty advice and inappropriate content.

  2. Consult women’s perspectives when developing AI policies that affect body-related topics.

  3. Improve transparency on why certain topics are restricted and how biases are addressed.

I believe OpenAI’s mission is to create useful and equitable AI, and I hope this issue will be taken seriously as part of that commitment.

Thank you for your time, and I look forward to seeing improvements in the AI’s approach to body-inclusive fashion and beauty discussions.

Best,

D. McCrary

I wouldn’t take the content policy restrictions too personally. I have been getting rejected on this prompt for the past 2 weeks and OpenAI is aware and has had people working on fixing it.
