Hi OpenAI Team,
First, thank you for the incredible work you’ve done with ChatGPT. I’ve been a user for a while and recently upgraded to the paid service. I’m posting to share some thoughts on how the user experience could be improved, which I hope will help prioritize future updates.
While I understand the push for new functionality in a competitive market, I believe addressing some key usability issues would greatly enhance the platform and keep it ahead of the curve. Here are a few pain points I’ve encountered:
###1. Memory Limit
The current memory capacity feels too restrictive, especially for users like me who want to use ChatGPT as a “second brain.” I’d prefer to keep all my discussions and references in one place rather than seeking alternatives like Obsidian. Increasing memory—even as part of a premium tier—would be a game-changer.
2. Interface and Organization
The layout feels unintuitive and could benefit from features like:
- A dropdown or grid system to manually allocate conversations into categories or topics (e.g., organizing book-related chats separately).
- AI-powered auto-sorting to group chats by topic.
- Potentially a folder view of the autosorted chats with a history.
These improvements would make navigating ongoing projects much easier.
3. Search Functionality
The current search feature is basic and clunky. An advanced, AI-powered search tool that retrieves specific information based on intent would be immensely helpful. Auto sorting chats by topic in the search view could also improve efficiency.
4. Combining Chats
I often voice-activate ChatGPT while driving, which leads to multiple chats on the same topic. It would be great to combine related chats or resume old ones. This would reduce clutter, improve continuity, and possibly save on storage costs for OpenAI.
5. Character Limit Indicator
A visible character limit counter, along with a warning when nearing the cap, would be a practical addition. It would help users plan their input without sudden interruptions.
6. Image Gallery
A centralized image gallery for generated images would eliminate the need to hunt through multiple chats. This feature would streamline workflows, especially for visual projects.
7. Interrupt feature
I did submit a ticket previously, but I believe that the interrupt feature needs a code word for now to interrupt because the GPT does not understand the difference if my wife and I are talking to eachother or to the GPT. so every time we start talking the chat stops, and we need to whisper to eachother so as not to disturb the GPT. This feels intrusive to me. A simple “Interrupt” command will be good. I understand that does not allow for a more flowing chat but its better than the end user not being able to talk when the GPT is talking.
I previously submitted a ticket regarding the interrupt feature, but I wanted to suggest adding a code word, like “Interrupt,” to address a key issue. Currently, GPT doesn’t distinguish between conversations my wife and I have with each other versus commands directed at it. This causes the chat to pause whenever we start talking, forcing us to whisper to avoid interruptions.
While I understand this may limit the flow of the conversation, a simple interrupt command would be a practical solution and much less intrusive for the user. It would ensure smoother interactions without compromising our ability to communicate freely alongside GPT.
Lastly I will be looking for product development roles at chat GPT and while I do not have the education for it, I have the experience and would absolutely love to get involved to ensure that ChatGPT stays the leader. I have over 15 years experience of helping develop and test software and would love to add my experience to the world of AI. If you can let your recruiters know and I could have a chat with them, that would be fantastic and who knows, maybe it could be the start of a beautiful relationship.
Thanks for reading my essay and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Best regards
Marc Benny
