Feature requst: Side chats with shared project context

Feature request: Side threads / parallel scratchpad chats inside a Project or conversation

I often work on large projects in ChatGPT where the main conversation contains important long-term context. During that work, I frequently have small side questions: quick technical checks, terminology questions, small experiments, or temporary “scratchpad” thoughts.

Today, the workaround is to open a separate chat, but that separate chat does not automatically know the project context. This means I have to re-explain the project, copy context over manually, or clutter the main conversation with small side questions that are not important long-term.

I would love a feature that allows “side threads” or “parallel scratchpad chats” inside the same Project or main conversation.

Suggested behavior:

  • A main chat remains the clean project timeline.

  • One or more side chats can be opened next to it.

  • Side chats can access the same project context/files/instructions as the main chat.

  • Side chats can be temporary, deletable, or optionally promoted/merged into the main chat.

  • Useful side answers could be saved as notes/reminders.

  • Temporary side chats should not clutter the main conversation history.

This would be especially useful for coding, research, business planning, website builds, debugging, and other long-running projects where the user needs both a clean main thread and quick context-aware side discussions.

Hey @Thorminator! This is a pretty neat idea.A scratchpad thread inside the same project would be a great way to handle small detours without losing the clean flow of the main chat.

Really appreciate you sharing it. I can’t promise a timeline right now, but I’ll pass it along internally.
