Feature Request: Warning notification before reaching the chat message limit

Hi OpenAI Team,

I would like to suggest a feature that would greatly improve the user experience for long conversations: a warning notification before a chat thread reaches its maximum message or context limit.

Currently, when a chat hits the limit, it can happen unexpectedly. This often results in a sudden loss of context, making it difficult to transition smoothly to a new thread.

If ChatGPT could show a brief warning (e.g., “You are approaching the message limit for this chat”), users would have the opportunity to generate a “handoff summary.” This summary could encapsulate all key points, decisions, and data from the current conversation, allowing the user to copy-paste it into a brand-new chat to continue their work seamlessly.

This small feature would be incredibly helpful for professional workflows, coding sessions, and deep-dive research.

Thank you for considering this request!

Hey @tgelser, I can see how a heads-up would help, especially when you’re deep into a project and want time to save the key details.

The current full-chat notice may offer an option to start a new chat with a summary, though some details can be left out. Until then, a useful workaround is to ask ChatGPT for a handoff summary periodically and save it for your next chat. There’s more on this in the Free Tier FAQ.

I’ll pass along your suggestion for an earlier warning. I can’t promise if or when it’ll be added, but the example you shared makes it clear how it would help.
