Hi OpenAI team & community
First off — I’m a huge fan. I use ChatGPT daily and find the UI version (browser/app) especially helpful for learning.
About me: I’m a Senior Product Data Scientist working mostly with tabular data. I often use ChatGPT to study new topics, and while many colleagues use the API, I prefer the browser UI I feel the responses are more to-the-point (perhaps due to unseen system prompts or context handling).
The Idea: Side Threads for Exploratory Learning
When learning something new, I often pause the main discussion to ask clarifying or related questions. For example:
Main thread: How do transformers work?
Side question: Why is positional encoding needed?
Another side thought: Can this relate to the Fourier series?
These “detours” are incredibly helpful for understanding, but currently, they break the flow of the main conversation. I either:
- Derail the linear thread,
- Or lose track when I try to return to the main topic later.
Feature Request: Threaded or Nested Chats
Let us open side questions or mini-threads in the same session. Think of it like comments in Google Docs or branches in a Notion page. This would:
- Preserve learning flow
- Support curiosity without friction
- Make the session easier to navigate and review later
Here’s a quick visual mockup I made of how it could look:
Who This Helps
- Students learning with ChatGPT as a tutor
- Professionals like me researching new concepts
- Anyone who thinks in tangents but wants to stay organized
Would love to hear if others feel this could be useful too. Happy to elaborate or help design the UX flow further!
Thanks again for building something that truly transforms the way we think and learn
