I’d love to see ChatGPT support custom themes and UI personalization.
Right now, customization is limited, but imagine if users could:
- Create and apply pre-set themes (switchable in settings)
- Build fully custom themes using code (CSS-like or a safe theme language)
- Share themes with the community (like plugins or presets or a sharable link
- Toggle themes per conversation or global settings
This would open the door for a much more personal experience - everything from minimal dark setups to highly stylized creative UIs.
Curious what others think: Would you use custom-coded themes, or prefer ready-made presets? And what kind of theme system would feel most usable to you?

- What I’m ultimately trying to accomplish:
At a high level, I’m trying to enable a significantly more personalized and adaptable user experience within ChatGPT. Right now, the interface is largely fixed aside from basic light/dark modes, but different users have very different preferences in how they interact with different platforms.
The goal is to introduce a system where users can:
- Choose between multiple pre-set themes (e.g., minimal, high-contrast, focus mode, developer-oriented layouts, etc.)
- Apply custom styling (such as CSS or a supported styling framework) for more advanced personalization.
- Potentially customize layout structure, such as spacing, panel positioning, UI density, etc.
This would allow users to shape ChatGPT into an environment that feels more natural and comfortable for their specific workflows, rather than adapting themselves to a single default interface.
- What I do today and what isn’t working:
Currently, I use the Stylish on Chrome extension to inject custom CSS and modify the appearance of ChatGPT.
While this provides some level of control, it comes with several limitations:
- Fragility: Since it’s not officially supported, any UI update can break styles unexpectedly.
- No portability or sharing: There’s no way to package, share, or standardize themes across a team or community.
- Limited scalability: Managing multiple themes or switching between them is not user-friendly.
- Security/maintenance concerns: Relying on third-party extensions introduces additional overhead and potential risks.
In short, while it’s a workaround, it doesn’t provide a stable or scalable solution for real customization.
- What would be different if this were solved perfectly:
If this were implemented well, it would meaningfully improve productivity across a wide range of users not just myself or my team.
From a practical standpoint, the impact would include:
- Grater comfort and reduced friction
Users could change colors, spacing, contrast, and layout to reduce eye strain and cognitive load, especially during long sessions.
- Improved workflow efficiency:
Layout customization (for example, adjusting where conversations, tools, or panels appear) could help users align the interface with how they naturally work, reducing unnecessary navigation and improving speed.

Hey @CubicHub! Thanks for laying all of that out, this is super helpful. It makes a lot of sense that the current workaround with custom CSS extensions works to a point, but doesn’t really scale or feel stable enough for something people use every day.
The idea of combining presets for most users with deeper theme/layout controls for advanced users is really solid. I can’t share a timeline, but I’ll make sure this gets passed along internally.
