Feature Request: I would like to propose the introduction of a feature that allows users to selectively delete or edit specific messages within a ChatGPT conversation. This functionality would be particularly useful in long chat sessions where only certain parts of the conversation are relevant or needed for future reference.
Use Case: In instances where a chat session includes a large number of exchanges, users may wish to retain only certain questions and answers that are of particular importance. The ability to delete or edit irrelevant or less important parts of the chat would make it easier to focus on the key information and facilitate better organization and retrieval of data.
Suggested Implementation:
- Selective Deletion: An option to delete individual chat messages or a series of messages directly within the chat interface.
- Edit Capability: The ability to edit previous responses or questions to correct errors, update information, or refine the content for clarity.
Benefits:
- Enhanced User Experience: Users can tailor the chat history to their specific needs, making the tool more flexible and user-friendly.
- Improved Information Management: Easier to manage, review, and refer back to important parts of the conversation.
- Increased Efficiency: Saves time and effort in extracting and preserving valuable information from lengthy chats.
I believe that incorporating this feature would greatly enhance the practicality and user-friendliness of ChatGPT. I hope you will consider this request for future updates of the tool.
Thank you for your continuous efforts in improving ChatGPT and for considering this suggestion. I look forward to seeing the ongoing evolution of this remarkable tool.

Really want this feature for the benefits you describe! Also allows for better sharing.

Yes please! Edit and delete messages to improve context, to create more focused chats. I want to be able to refine and remove unnecessary context, and to clean up the noise from what is otherwise a solid flow.

Yes please! Will enable to refer to the chat without seeing repetitive versions and unnecessary clutter!

As a user who uses chatgpt to vba code to create excel spreadsheets, there is usually hundreds of iterations of code generation during the conversation.
Generate code via prompt →
Run in VBA Editor->
Evaluate/Test →
Enhance code via prompt →
Rinse and Repeat
It would be valuable to be able to delete/trash/archive certain prompts so that the conversation can be kept tidy, currently the conversation easily go based 10,000 lines

Chiming in to say, I, too want this feature. I’ve been taking turns collaboratively writing fiction with ChatGPT, and often the segments I let it write begin with useful, interesting, on-plot content, but take a turn into logical errors, devolve into nonsense, or repeat the resolution to previous plot beats.
I’d love to be able to retroactively truncate the end of a ChatGPT response, to be able to continue from the point at which it stopped being good.
As things stand, I copy/paste the usable portion of the response into my preceding segment and regenerate from there. In the event of repeated derailments like this, my process results in truly bloated posts from me, which become hard to manage due to their size.
It would also be nice to be able to edit the ChatGPT responses farther back in the conversation, without needing to re-generate everything from that point onwards. I’d love to retroactively insert foreshadowing, and to alter the style of the ChatGPT-generated segments.

Yes please this would be sooo useful, I love having different conversations for all things relevant in my life but it can become difficult to use it once the replies start piling up, I’d love to keep it compact

This Chrome extension provides the ability to bulk remove/archive chats
I agree!!
- Selective Deletion can be extremely beneficial, especially to correct the scope of context and keep what is relevant to the conversation in cases of hallucinations or iterations to initial ask.
For 2, not sure if it was implemented at the time of writing, but you can edit your own chats. You can’t edit the responses, but I think that may make sense unless there is a way to do it that avoids potential confusion.
Hope this makes it’s way in soon, the team has been iterating on new features so fast, and this can maybe play a crucial role in the new Canvas beta!
Or at least hide it from view so it’s less confusing when trying to find relevant information that got lost in a bunch of bad responses
Yes please allow users to delete/edit out questions/answers within a chat!
It’s so much wasted time and energy to sort through the 70% of less-relevant responses/lines of inquiry when trying to compile information. This would make the saved chats infinitely more valuable.
It sounds like a lot of people would like this, and I certainly would. It also seems like a pretty simple fix/addition. Hopefully it is a feature that is available soon.
Voting this again in Nov 2024

I made an account specifically to show my support for this idea, the more time I spend with chat the more I long for a feature such as this.
