Feature Request: Persistent Suggested Prompts Across a Chat Conversation

Feature Request: Persistent Suggested Prompts Across a Chat Conversation

Feature: Retain contextual follow-up suggestions for every message in a conversation
Product: ChatGPT

Problem Statement

ChatGPT provides useful contextual follow-up suggestions after each response. However, when a user submits another question, the suggestions associated with the previous response disappear and are replaced by suggestions for the latest response.

Frequently, these suggestions contain valuable ideas that users may want to explore later. Losing them interrupts the user’s workflow and makes it difficult to revisit promising directions without manually reconstructing the original prompts.

Proposed Enhancement

Retain the suggested prompts associated with every assistant response throughout the conversation, rather than displaying suggestions only for the latest response.

Expected Behaviour

  1. Persistent suggestions: Each assistant response retains its original contextual follow-up suggestions.
  2. Historical accessibility: Users can scroll back to an earlier response and select any of its suggested prompts.
  3. Independent selection: Selecting an earlier suggestion submits it as a new message in the existing conversation, preserving the conversation context.
  4. Visual association: Suggestions remain clearly associated with the response that generated them.
  5. Space-efficient presentation: Suggestions may be displayed as compact, expandable prompt chips to avoid cluttering long conversations.

Example Scenario

A user asks about designing an MCP-based AI Concierge. ChatGPT suggests exploring MCP server discovery, client registration and security.

The user then asks a follow-up question about security, receiving a new set of suggestions. The original suggestions about discovery and registration should remain available under the earlier response.

The user should be able to return to those suggestions and select one without having to remember or manually retype it.

Benefits

  • Preserves useful ideas generated during exploratory conversations.
  • Supports non-linear thinking and multi-directional research.
  • Reduces repetitive prompting and lost opportunities.
  • Improves continuity and usability in long technical discussions.
  • Makes ChatGPT more effective as a research, design and brainstorming workspace.

Acceptance Criteria

  • Suggestions remain available for all assistant responses in the current conversation.
  • Earlier suggestions remain selectable after multiple follow-up messages.
  • Selecting a historical suggestion continues the same conversation.
  • The interface remains usable on both mobile and desktop devices.

Recommendation: Treat contextual follow-up suggestions as persistent conversation elements, not temporary UI elements that are replaced after every new message.

This enhancement would make ChatGPT substantially more useful for complex, iterative conversations where good ideas often need to be revisited several steps later.
