I’d like Codex in VS Code to support opening the session in an editor tab (or detachable window), similar to how Claude Code can open as a tab in the editor area.
Current behavior:
-
Codex opens as a Sidebar view container.
-
It can be moved between Primary Side Bar, Secondary Side Bar, and Panel.
-
It cannot be opened as an editor tab in the top tab row.
Why this matters:
-
Multi-monitor workflows are much better when the AI session can live in a separate VS Code window/tab area.
-
Sidebar/panel layouts are workable but less ergonomic for long coding sessions.
Requested behavior:
-
Add an option like “Open Codex in Editor Tab” (and ideally support detaching to another window).
-
Preserve session continuity between sidebar and tab view.
Environment:
-
VS Code: 1.122.1
-
Codex extension: 26.527.31454
-
OS: Windows 11
This would significantly improve Codex usability for power users and multi-monitor setups.
Thank you for considering this!
