Hi OpenAI team and community!
AI is increasingly being used to assist human thinking, but its role in multi-party collaboration and discussion remains limited. Currently, ChatGPT allows users to interact with only one GPT at a time, which restricts the potential for in-depth, multi-perspective discussions.
Therefore, I would like to formally propose a Multi-GPT Group Chat Feature, outlining its benefits, potential ethical concerns, and necessary safeguards.
Feature Overview
- Users can invite multiple Custom GPTs to a single conversation for diverse insights.
- Multiple users, each with their own GPTs, can participate in a shared discussion space.
- A moderator GPT can be designated to facilitate and regulate discussions if needed.
Potential Use Cases
Policy Research & Strategic Analysis: AI simulating expert panels for policy discussions.
Investment & Business Analysis: Different financial AI models analyzing trends together.
Education & Learning: AI-driven knowledge debates among students and researchers.
Team Collaboration & Brainstorming: AI-enhanced ideation for teams and organizations.
Ethical Concerns & Proposed Solutions
While this feature has great potential, it also poses significant risks if not properly managed. Here are some key concerns and suggested safeguards:
(1) Group Harassment & Exclusion Issues
- Risk: Certain users may be isolated, bullied, or subjected to gaslighting in a multi-user AI discussion.
- Solutions:
Moderator AI to regulate discussions (e.g., time limits, user protection).
Report & auto-moderation system (detects and mitigates toxic behavior).
Balanced speaking rights enforcement (prevents dogpiling & silencing).
(2) Discussion Quality Control
- Risk: Users may enter with vastly different knowledge levels or intent, making meaningful discussions difficult. Some may deliberately disrupt conversations.
- Solutions:
Entry requirements (e.g., “Only finance-related GPTs allowed in this chatroom”).
AI Moderator to maintain discussion flow & block disruptive behavior.
Context-aware filtering (prevents off-topic or trolling behavior).
(3) Risk of Groupthink & Extremism
- Risk: Users with similar views may reinforce each other’s biases, leading to echo chambers or extremism.
- Solutions:
Automatic inclusion of diverse viewpoints via AI-generated counterarguments.
AI-driven debate balancing (ensures multiple perspectives are represented).
Caution messages for political & ethical debates.
Technical Challenges & Considerations
Developing a multi-GPT group chat function presents several technical hurdles:
Context Management: How can multiple GPTs maintain conversation coherence without losing track of the discussion?
Latency & Synchronization: Ensuring smooth, real-time dialogue flow among multiple AI models.
UI/UX Design: Creating an intuitive interface for users to manage multiple GPTs effectively.
Existing Discussions
Many similar discussions have been raised in this forum, but they remain fragmented and lack structured follow-up. This proposal aims to consolidate those discussions and present a more comprehensive request.
- Multi-Agent Debate Technique
- Developing a Multi-GPT Conversation Platform
- Feature Request: Group Chat for ChatGPT
Conclusion
I believe a Multi-GPT Group Chat Feature could significantly expand the use cases of ChatGPT. However, strong safeguards and ethical design principles must be incorporated to prevent misuse.
I’d love to hear feedback from the OpenAI team and the community!
