I would like to request a feature that allows users to collapse an entire ChatGPT response into a compact form.
My main problem is not only that individual responses can be long, but that long conversations can become very difficult to navigate. When a conversation contains many detailed ChatGPT responses, scrolling back to find an earlier message can take a significant amount of time.
I would therefore like each assistant response to have a collapse/expand control.
For example, after collapsing a response, it could appear like this:
ChatGPT response — “Explanation of Topic B Thermodynamics”
Instead of displaying the full response, only a short preview, title, or first line would remain visible. Clicking it would expand the full answer again.
Ideally, the feature could include:
-
A collapse/expand button for each complete ChatGPT response.
-
A “Collapse all responses” and “Expand all responses” option for the entire conversation.
-
Automatically generated short titles or previews for collapsed responses, so users can still identify what each answer was about.
-
Preservation of the collapsed state while navigating within the conversation.
-
Support on both desktop and mobile.
The main benefit would be much easier navigation in long conversations.
For users who use one conversation continuously for studying, projects, research, or ongoing work, ChatGPT may generate many long responses over time. Even if the current response is useful, older responses can take up a large amount of vertical space and make it difficult to move between different parts of the conversation.
Collapsing complete assistant responses would make long conversations much easier to browse and would reduce unnecessary scrolling.
As an additional feature, it would also be useful if users could collapse individual sections inside a response.
For example:
Summary
Detailed Explanation
Examples
Additional Notes
However, I consider collapsing the entire assistant response to be the more important feature. Section-level collapsing would be a useful secondary improvement.
I think this would significantly improve the usability of ChatGPT for long-running conversations, especially for users who frequently work with detailed answers.
