Hello OpenAI Community,
I would like to propose a ChatGPT feature idea called:
Persona Console / Mode-Switching System for ChatGPT
The basic idea is to give users a clear, user-controlled way to create and switch between different assistant “modes” for different types of conversations, projects, or emotional/creative needs.
This would not be for pretending the AI is a real person. Instead, it would be a transparent customization system where the user can define communication styles, boundaries, and use cases for each mode.
Example modes
A user could have modes such as:
-
Core Assistant Mode — default assistant behavior
-
Professional Mode — work, documents, productivity, formal writing
-
Creative Writing Mode — fiction, characters, worldbuilding, comic/story development
-
Study Mode — tutoring, learning, step-by-step explanations
-
Supportive Reflection Mode — journaling, emotional reflection, gentle tone
-
Project-Specific Mode — tied to a specific project folder or long-running task
Example commands
Users could switch modes with simple commands like:
-
“Switch to Professional Mode”
-
“Activate Creative Writing Mode”
-
“Return to Core Assistant”
-
“Use Study Mode for this chat”
-
“Show me which mode is active”
Main feature request
The system could include:
-
Active Mode Indicator
ChatGPT clearly shows which mode is currently active so the user does not feel confused. -
Mode Switching Commands
Users can activate, deactivate, or reset modes with clear commands. -
Saved Mode Profiles
Users can save preferred communication styles, rules, and boundaries for each mode. -
Project-Based Modes
A project folder could have its own default mode, helping keep different workflows organized. -
Safety and Transparency Rules
The assistant should always remain clear that these are AI communication modes, not real identities. Modes should avoid deception, impersonation, or unsafe emotional dependency. -
Reset / Restore Default Option
Users should always have an easy way to return to the default assistant behavior.
Why this would help
Many users use ChatGPT for very different purposes: work, study, creative projects, journaling, planning, coding, fitness, family documents, and personal organization. A mode-switching system would make ChatGPT feel more organized and intentional.
It would reduce the need for users to repeat instructions in every new chat. It would also help keep creative roleplay, serious work, emotional reflection, and technical tasks separated in a healthier and clearer way.
Safety benefit
A built-in Persona Console could actually make customization safer because the system would define boundaries clearly. Instead of users creating confusing or unstructured roleplay prompts, ChatGPT could provide transparent mode labels, reset commands, and reminders that the assistant is still an AI.
Summary
I believe a Persona Console / Mode-Switching System would improve:
-
User control
-
Personalization
-
Project continuity
-
Safety boundaries
-
Emotional clarity
-
Creative workflows
-
Professional organization
Thank you for considering this feature idea.
I have a more formal private proposal document prepared for my own records, but I am posting the full public version here directly so the idea can be read easily.
