Feature Proposal by Lavish Garg: Lock Individual ChatGPT Conversations
Proposed by: Lavish Garg
I would like to suggest a privacy feature for ChatGPT: the ability to lock an individual conversation with a PIN, Face ID, fingerprint, or device authentication.
Currently, protecting the entire ChatGPT account/device does not specifically protect one particular conversation. Users may have some conversations that are more private than others.
Proposed Feature
Add a “Lock Chat” option to the three-dot menu of every ChatGPT conversation.
For example:
Chat options
-
Rename
-
Share
-
Archive
-
Lock Chat -
Delete
When a user selects Lock Chat, that specific conversation becomes protected.
How it could work
-
User selects
Lock Chat. -
User chooses a security method:
-
PIN
-
Face ID
-
Fingerprint
-
Device authentication
-
-
The conversation becomes locked.
-
The conversation’s contents and preview are hidden.
-
Opening the conversation requires authentication.
-
Other normal ChatGPT conversations remain accessible.
-
The user can unlock or remove the lock whenever they want.
Optional Privacy Features
It could also include:
-
Automatic locking after 1, 5, 15, or 30 minutes.
-
Hide the conversation from search until authenticated.
-
Hide message previews in notifications.
-
Option to hide the existence of the locked conversation.
-
Separate authentication for particularly sensitive conversations.
Example
A user might have:
Meta Ads Campaign
Work Project
Study Notes
Personal Conversation
Financial Planning
Only the locked conversations would require additional authentication.
Why I think this would be useful
People increasingly use ChatGPT for personal, professional, financial, business, and other sensitive conversations.
Someone may be comfortable allowing another person to use their ChatGPT account or computer while still wanting certain conversations to remain private.
A per-conversation lock would provide more control without requiring the user to lock their entire ChatGPT account.
My Request
I would like to formally submit this as a feature proposal to OpenAI.
Proposed by: Lavish Garg
If OpenAI ever implements this specific feature or a substantially similar version, I would greatly appreciate it if OpenAI could acknowledge Lavish Garg as a public proposer of this feature where appropriate.
I understand that similar privacy concepts may exist in other applications and that other users may independently have suggested related ideas. My purpose here is to publicly document my own proposal for this functionality in ChatGPT.
Thank you to the ChatGPT/OpenAI team for considering the suggestion.
