Enhancing ChatGPT with a Prompt Template Library: A feature proposal to streamline customized responses and boost efficiency for all users

TL;DR:
I’m proposing a Prompt Template Library for ChatGPT that would allow users to save and reuse customized prompts with just a tap, improving efficiency and reducing repetitive typing. The feature would be accessible via a small icon (like a clipboard with a “T” or a bookmark) in the chat input area, allowing one-tap insertion of saved prompts. It could include tagging, search functionality, and a quick-save option, streamlining workflow for both casual users and professionals.

Body

I would like to propose a Prompt Template Library, or Saved Prompt Templates feature in ChatGPT. This feature would allow you (users) to save, access, and reuse customized prompts. Just like updating memory, ChatGPT could save the prompt and it would simply be accessed from the setting menu, or as a quick submission through an clipboard or bookmark icon that lives in the message box next to the other attachment icons.

This would make ChatGPT even more efficient, especially for professionals and frequent users who often need consistent responses or reusable prompts. Imagine the ability to quickly call up previously crafted prompts without having to retype or copy/paste each time—this feature could enhance productivity and creativity alike.

Who Would Benefit:

This feature could benefit many user types:

  • Writers who frequently reuse templates for storytelling, articles, or structured outlines.
  • Educators who craft similar lesson plans or responses to student questions.
  • Customer support agents who handle similar types of inquiries with reusable responses.
  • Researchers who often build complex, layered prompts for analysis.
  • Casual users who enjoy personalizing their prompts and want to quickly recall favorite setups.

Why It Matters:

A Prompt Template Library would streamline workflow and eliminate the need for repetitive re-typing, making ChatGPT even more versatile and efficient. It would enhance productivity for both casual and pro users alike. It would encourage more creative uses of ChatGPT. Having quick access to saved prompts would also improve the consistency and accuracy of responses over time. Possibly allowing new methods of studying user-submission nuance to avoid over-consistent or stagnating responses.

How It Could Work on Mobile (e.g. iPhone):

  1. Template Icon: Add a small icon, such as a clipboard with a “T” on it, a bookmark, or a folder with a “T”, in the message input area, next to existing icons for images, files, etc. This would allow users to access their templates with minimal effort.
  2. Cascading Menu: If space is a concern, the icons could cascade upwards when tapped, keeping the design clean and user-friendly without overcrowding the message bar. (4 icons would now be present in the message input area so tapping a double chevron down or up icon ︾ to open the attachment icons)
  3. One-Tap Insertion: Tapping the template icon would open a list of saved prompts. From there, a simple tap would insert the chosen template directly into the message field, ready for use or further edits.
  4. Quick Save Option: Users could easily save a message as a template by pressing and holding on a message after it’s sent. A “Save as Template” option would appear, allowing them to store frequently used prompts for future access.
  5. Alternatively, asking ChatGPT to save it to templates, similarly to how it updates memory, could be implemented: “Can you save that to my templates please?” would work, or any variation. If conflicting data arises, and ChatGPT doesnt know whether to save it to memory, or to a template, it could ask you.
  6. Tagging and Search: For easier organization, users could tag templates and search for them quickly using a built-in search bar, ensuring they find what they need, even if they have many saved templates.

Looking for Feedback:

I’m looking for thoughts on the potential use cases, ideas for the user interface design, and additional functionality (e.g., tagging, sorting, quick access). Do you think a prompt template feature could improve your ChatGPT experience? What would you do?
