Codex VSCode extension does not show diffs which hinders development

Environment

  • Surface: VSCode Extension
  • Codex version: 0.153.4.
  • Mac OS
  • Free Plan; Considering to upgrade but not quite happy with the experience given this bug.

Bug

Unlike Copilot and Cursor, when Codex changes files in my workspace, I don’t directly see diffs to approve or decline/undo. git diff is unreliable because it mixes my diffs with Codex diffs, among other reasons.

Reproduction

Download the extension on VSCode and ask Codex to change any file. You will see the file magically changed and it may be hard to find which lines changed exactly or how to undo the change.

This is also flagged on Github issue #21242 and it’s surprising to me it hasn’t been fixed since May.

I came across the same issue and based on my research I found out that for the code diff to be shown, the chat name and the project must be same and that worked for me when I changed the codex chat name to my project name
