Codex sign-in asks for phone verification on paid account

Same issue here. Can’t log in to ChatGPT Work \ Codex desktop because the account is linked to the old phone number I no longer have access to. Paid Pro user.

@OpenAI_Support any updates here?

Ditto. I can log in fine to chatgpt dot com or this forum, but get block at phone number verification. Kinda PITA as work would like me not to use my personal account, but I do not have a work phone.

Aah.. relieved to learn I am not the only one. The bug doesn’t make any sense. It is asking me to register a phone number to access Codex CLI and then denies saying that the number is used with allowed maximum of accounts. That is surprising as the number was never used with any other ChatGPT account.

The support is not helpful and feels like a deaf wall. Case 10915502

I hope they fix the issue soon. Claude for the win meanwhile!

Posting the message again since we merged a few threads relating to this issue.

Hi everyone, we made a change addressing an issue where Codex sign-in requested verification of an old or inaccessible phone number after you had already successfully signed in to your account. If this describes your situation, please try signing in to Codex again.

If you still encounter the same issue, reply with your existing support case number so we can review it further. Please do not post your email address, phone number, verification codes, or other personal information publicly.

This verification process is very different to what you are describing here.

On both, my personal plus subscription and my business subscription (paid by the company, im working at) asking for mobile number without even having that feature enabled and also no known number.

Im supposed to enter a number, so this cant be a protection, to make sure, its real me. And best on that is, when i hit it once, i will hit it again on the next time in the exact same way. So it is not even remembering my mobile number.

As i don’t have a business mobile number, i just can’t access my business codex account anymore. I could use my personal number but im pretty sure, that this is no good idea, as it might even prevent me from accessing my own paid account in future or something like.

So what is the usecase of this stupid mobile number asking? Im logging in with passkeys, which are way more secure than my mobile number or any OTP, which is also enabled.

so big question is:

how will i be able, to login back to my business account to use it, as it is paid for?

This “fun” is already going for over a month now! So actually we can start talking about refunding. @OpenAI_Support

I have exactly the same problem. So far, support has not offered me a solution. I have also enabled OTP, but it makes no difference. It seems as though OpenAI does not care about its paying customers.

Interestingly, some of my colleagues have the same issue, but not everyone is required to verify their identity using a phone number. For some colleagues, a normal login was sufficient.

OpenAI has no effective way to associate a Discourse forum account with a specific ChatGPT account, particularly because the accounts may use different email addresses.

For that reason, the user should contact support@openai.com using the email address associated with the affected ChatGPT account. After receiving a reply, they should post the Case ID here.

its not about guessing my real account name or identity from an forum user but …

to finally get rid of those problems IN GENERAL

if anybody in here wanted to get a individual problem getting solved, they would be wrong here. But we dont have individual problems but everyone the same one which is a general issue in any mechanism to prevent ppl from using x accounts to bypass limits. This mechanism is causing problems to regular users which are paying and not being able to use the service anymore.

I am experiencing exactly the same problem.

I am already a paying ChatGPT Plus subscriber, but I cannot access Codex because the sign-in process forces me to complete phone verification, and my country code is not supported.

I contacted OpenAI Support, but I have not received a meaningful response or solution. My support case number is 11788068. I also requested a refund through Google, but the refund request was rejected.

Codex was one of the main reasons I paid for ChatGPT Plus, yet this core feature remains completely inaccessible to me. I have paid for the subscription, Support is not responding, and I cannot obtain a refund for a service whose key functionality I cannot use.

This is extremely frustrating. I hope OpenAI will investigate this issue and provide affected paying users with either a working sign-in method, an alternative verification option, or an appropriate refund.
