Codex Remote Control on Windows – how Remote Projects actually work

I recently set up Codex Remote Control between my HomePC and WorkPC and found the workflow quite confusing at first.

What I eventually discovered is:

  • Remote conversations from HomePC appear on WorkPC with a small blue globe icon.
  • However, the HomePC project structure does not automatically appear under Codex Projects on WorkPC.
  • To make a remote project easy to navigate, on WorkPC you need to use:

Add Project → Remote → select HomePC → browse to the existing project folder

Once added, the remote project appears properly under Projects on WorkPC and its existing conversations are shown beneath it.

So the practical model seems to be:

Local Project = project folder on WorkPC
Remote Project = project folder on HomePC accessed through Remote Control

Opening a local project returns Codex to the WorkPC environment. Opening a remote project or remote conversation works against HomePC.

One other confusing detail is that Codex projects also appear under ChatGPT, which makes it less obvious whether you are looking at normal ChatGPT projects or Codex/local project state.

The blue globe icons are useful once you understand them, but initially there is very little explanation of what they mean.

A few UI/documentation improvements would make this much clearer:

  • Tooltip on the blue globe: “Remote conversation – HomePC”
  • Clear explanation of Local vs Remote Projects
  • Documentation showing the Add Project → Remote → Source folder workflow
  • Clearer distinction between ChatGPT Projects and Codex Projects
  • A more obvious indication of which machine/environment a conversation belongs to

Once understood, the feature is actually very useful. I can work from WorkPC directly against projects and files stored on HomePC without copying repositories between machines.

The feature works well — it just took quite a bit of experimentation to understand the intended workflow.

Got to say, that I concur and wholeheartedly agree.

The mobile app is doing a clear job at this, which would make the macOS app better too. The iOS app shows each remote connected computer with a green circle to show that it’s online and connected and shows its local projects/chats.

Would be great to have that functionality on the macOS app as is.
