Codex limits spark frustration among subscribers

i am really frustrated due to this limit issue. The limit is draining so quickly even for small tasks. i don’t know what the openai is thinking and what’s its plan , thinking of cancelling my subscription and switching to some other . Recommend me some good options other the codex and claude

Pasted a 30-word prompt to have Work mark a < 100-word dispatch as solved. Worked for 2 minutes. No idea why. But I was at 39% at the start and at 36% when it was done. Terra Medium again. The timing of the IPO announcement and this sudden token bleed, no doubt resulting in increased revenue, is sus. “Revenues are up X%!” Won’t help the stock price if the customers are gone though.

I am a ChatGPT 5x subscriber:

Has anyone noticed how OpenAI’s Codex 5.6 Sol does not provide the same value as Anthropic’s Claude Opus/Fable?

I exhausted my weekly quota using my ChatGPT pro 5x plan, and I did not use the Ultra setting. The ultra setting would use my entire usage within 16 hours, and I only used Extra High this time around and exhausted my usage within 12 hours.

I was able to use Fable 5 for two 6-hour sessions or two prompts and I only used 23% of my weekly fable usage and 16% of my overall weekly usage.

My 16% overall usage also includes multiple Opus 5 max requests on building prompts for 3 different powerpoints, and then a polishing request, and a fully building a powerpoint deck in claude design.

I understand I still have my ChatGPT pro that I can use in the browser, and I wont get the same overview or completion review.

So, have you noticed a degradation in output and an decrease to your overall weekly usage?

I was going to upgrade my subscription to 20x but I am realizing the value is not worth it. These forums give useful and insightful information about usage and other constraints related to ChatGPT.

What I seemed to have notice prior to the last update where they removed 5hour limits and remove the actual usage from the profile menu, and hid it away in the settings pages, is that the weekly limit was a rolling limit, the reset date seemed to move, and each day seemed to sometimes restore % to the limit. Now its a fixed end reset date and no rolling usage, which drastically restricts usage if you use it intensely for a few days and then expect it to refresh slowly. Or was I wrong and just seeing things?

Also this EU governance legislation on AI coding seems to have implemented a lot of OVER THE TOP build gates and fences and such that cause the agents to review massive amounts of code even for small changes. Even for MVP or Pilot or demo projects, anything connected to a code source repository it determines is a production system ???

If the same workload now uses the weekly limit much faster, users need a clear breakdown of how usage is measured. That would help show whether this is a bug or a real change to the plan.

I was so flustrated with recent shrinking of weekly limit that i seach info about and found this thread. Such a shame, they really did it. Silently, like Antropic. The reason why i left Claude, silent shrinking. From week limit we have almost 5h limits. CRAZY

I’ve been seeing unusually rapid drops in my Codex usage limits over the past couple of weeks.

At first I noticed it with Sol, where the available usage seemed to disappear far faster than it used to. Because of that, I switched over to GPT-5.3-Codex-Spark, but now I’m seeing the same issue there as well.

In the past, I could use Codex for several hours a day without reaching the limit. Recently, though, the usage percentage has been falling much faster even when I’m barely using Codex.

The clearest example is GPT-5.3-Codex-Spark: my usage allowance was reset to 100% yesterday, and today it is already completely depleted, despite almost no Codex activity on my side.

This doesn’t look like normal usage to me. It feels like the rate limit or usage accounting may be calculated incorrectly somewhere.

I’m currently on the $100/month plan.

Has OpenAI officially said anything yet about these complaints — for example, an explanation, an admission that something is wrong, or confirmation that the usage rates have suddenly become much more expensive?

Because if that is the case, I’ll switch to another provider very quickly. I’m not going to pay the equivalent of $100 per day if my usage limit is being exhausted every single day.

I have ask chatgpt  to search about this problem online:
Yes. By now, it is clear that this is not just a handful of users.

My best estimate based on public reports as of August 22, 2026:

  • OpenAI Developer Community: the specific thread “Codex limits spark frustration among subscribers” now has around 39 replies. In just the first 20 replies, I can identify roughly 14 different users explicitly saying that their limits are being depleted much faster than before.
  • The general Codex Rate Limits Discussion Thread has around 429 replies. Not all of those replies are about the current August issue, so you cannot simply count all 429 as affected users.
  • On r/Codex, there are currently dozens of separate posts about the same issue. One thread from August 20 has 213+ upvotes and includes several users describing almost exactly the same problem: reset → a few hours of work → huge percentages of their quota suddenly gone.
  • Another post from August 16 about supposedly reduced limits has received 1,500+ upvotes. Upvotes are obviously not the same as individual complaints, but they do show that a large number of users recognize the problem.
  • The moderators of r/Codex themselves are now referring to the “current user limits storm” and have said they will continue allowing separate complaints about worsening limits until the situation is resolved.
  • An independent Codex quota tracker called TiboTattle has also appeared, with more than 500 Codex users reportedly contributing usage/quota data. That does not mean all 500 are complaining, but it does indicate how widespread the concern has become.

My conservative estimate is therefore that at least dozens, and probably well over 100 different users, have publicly complained specifically about unusually fast Codex usage depletion.

If you include all Reddit threads, OpenAI forum posts, deleted or redirected posts, and other discussions, the real number could easily be several hundred users, but I cannot prove an exact unique-user total because some people may have posted in multiple places.

What is particularly striking is that your specific symptom — quota reset to 100%, then almost or completely exhausted within one day despite very little usage — has now been reported by multiple other users as well.

So this is no longer just about people feeling that the limits are “too low.” There are also repeated reports of abnormally high usage depletion immediately after a reset.

I am also seeing users on both $100 and $200 plans publicly saying that they are considering cancelling their subscriptions or switching to Claude, Gemini, or other providers because of this.

Yes:

I would be happy if i quota lasted a day, my 200 plan is lasting few hours, i have tried all models, everything is exhausted at the same speed

I think this would be useful from the users who are complaining too.

I cannot currently repro this bad experience. In fact I’m hitting limits on my GitHub Pro account actions budget well before I’m hitting Codex Pro limits.

It would be great to see some example prompt transcripts with meta data (model, reasoning level) and perhaps some linked repos/PRs so that the issue can be reproduced by third parties.

There must be someone here working in Open Source who can demo excessive Codex consumption?

Mostly all we see is complaints here without any useful or third-party verifiable detail.

Perhaps there are languages, frameworks and types of setups that Codex works better with, and others that it struggles with - without details it’s hard to judge whether complaints are simply because your workflows and choices of architecture are simply less efficient.

As example, I just completed a migration of one of my utilities to Go:

This hit 45 files and, honestly, Codex didn’t really even break a sweat. The weekly quota use was maybe 3% (on Sol High)

As in my title, new to all this, however i been using codex since march, not knowing a thing about coding, and its been very generous all along. since July 5th with new model i do see some changes but all was going well since tuesday last week, things have been just draining accross all even doing simpler tasks.

so maybe go into more detail about what you are doing?

maybe push some examples to github (or equivalent) and elaborate on your experience with something that would allow someone else to reproduce your issue?

Yes, exactly. The hypocrisy of these accusations of black boxxing & manipulating the credit system while black boxxing their own diagnostic information!

It seems to me that people experience such losses and immediately blame the vehicle. Well, if you load up your car with a bunch of stuff don’t be surprised the gas efficiency dramatically declines!

It’s a shame, because to me it indicates a completely disregard for the underlying magic of programming. It would make many computer nerds who spent days debugging an ambiguous compiler error (for it to be a missing semicolon) roll in their grave!

There are so many options!

I can understand maybe they’re afraid of exposing their ideas and possibly directory paths or whatever, but they can literally say “Why did this take so long” or “Are there any critical health issues with the codebase?” “Can we separate this out into modules?”

But they throw more and more into their vehicle with zero regard for its efficiency and weight capacity and yet demand it drives the same way it does as its empty.

It truly makes me wonder. The magic of being able to literally talk to your computer, and yet it seems like many people are stuck in imperative mode until their flood of failure spill onto this forum

This is an observational case study on my private repo. There are no subagent’s being used and I’m only running the following , exclusively. There are no other prompts or background processes running.

I built a manual “commander/worker” loop:

Sol: audit code/evidence → write scoped .md orders

Human: relay orders (copy paste)

Luna: read .md → implement/test/commit code → report

Human: relay completion (“luna complete review and instruct”)

Repeat..

GPT‑5.6 Sol (medium) reviews the worker’s commit and test evidence, corrects course, then writes a tightly bounded 5–8 KB handoff; I relay it to GPT‑5.6 Luna (high), which edits only named files, runs specified checks, commits, and returns a ≤650-token report. I relay that report back to Sol and repeat.

Measured over ~4 hours, Sol averaged ~121k cached input tokens per internal call (97.1% cache ratio), while Luna averaged ~131k (97.7%). Weekly usage increased about four percentage points. These are actual Codex session telemetry values, not working-set estimates.

I know this may sound like an odd strategy. I developed this pattern to mitigate the massive recent increase in credit consumption. Four hours consumed ~4% of a 5×$100 weekly allowance.

This is absurd. Last week I was running this task completely in Sol high with no caching strategy for 10hrs a day while having 1 - 3 other Sol high tasks going on simultaneously and was staying in bounds of my limit.

Just sayin’!

More tips incoming. What can we share to help the community?

Ouch… It’s expected on using 5.6-sol high and very high most time.
How have you been working on gpt-5.5? The gpt-5.6-terra medium/high is direct replacement for gpt-5.5. The terra in some point is more advanced than gpt-5.5.
I use Sol models only for planning and architecture discussions/decisions. Rest of work is on Terra. Sometimes I can switch back to Sol for reviewing things done by Terra If I’m not sure. Working in this mode allows to code for 3-5 hours per day and I still have plenty limits left. And taking in account resets and the fact that OpenAI sometimes resets the limit it by its own. So…
And I’m on the Plus subscription.

doesnt matter 5.6 or 5.5, capacity is getting used the same way, maxime all models 100-0 in my case 6 hours

I totally feel you. I’ve been testing like crazy. There’s no amount of ‘better/best-practices/tips’ that can fill this massive credit devaluation. I’m totally confused as to why this thread hasn’t exploded with thousands of users.
