After the latest update, I noticed that Codex in VS Code more and more frequently shows only a gray background while the UI becomes completely unresponsive. In the background, Codex is still working on files.
Has anyone else experienced similar issues? I already tried switching to the beta version, but the same bug is present there.
It seems to happen completly randomly
Bump. Happens literally everytime I use it with extra high reasoning effort.
I usually stick to high reasoning effort and it still happens after every couple of prompts.
If I just give it some time and restart it after a while, then the Codex’s work is usually done and I can see the results after restart, but there’s no way of telling when it’s done, since the Extension is grayed out.
Bump. This is also happening to me. Is there anyway to report this as an official bug? What kind of logs are needed to help resolve the issue?

This has been happening to me all day. Also, whenever I click the “Review” button after code changes, it fails to launch the codex diff, which is very annoying..
I have to reload vscode like 5-6 times to get the actual extension to load properly.
Try reinstalling VSCode, extension etc. - I’ve had this trouble quite often and I don’t even frankly remember at this point what I’ve changed, but this is an issue that I haven’t seen in a long while now.
OMG! It’s The Gray Screen of Death 
Started happening to me too quite a bit. Especially on really long sessions. I’ve come up with a workaround: start another VS Code, open another project, open Codex, load your chat that is still working. The history will be gone but you’re going to get new outputs from the agent.
Then, close the first VS Code. Open another VS Code, load the initial project, close the backup VS Code. And voila you’re back in your project :D. It stopped giving me feedback after 2 messages though so I need to check this workaround more thoroughly.
sadly I do not think there is any solution to VSCode issues. it keeps hanging, freezing, not responding, getting SSH timeout/disconected like ALL THE TIME. even with one instance, not to mention open few of them.
real solution? only Codex CLI. at least for most of coding work. funny enough, if you open VSCode, you do get all the CLI sessions in history as well. why don’t you open VSCode (if you really so used to it) and then like few CLIs in terminal for doing most of actual coding? sessions will not get disapear, they will all land in VSCode chat history.
