ChatGPT's User Experience: What is Behind the Decline in Intelligence?

Since the beginning of this year, I have noticed some significant changes in the functionality and performance of ChatGPT, especially in terms of its intelligence and depth of reasoning. Once, whether as a work assistant or a daily conversational partner, ChatGPT left a deep impression on me. But now, with the use of the GPT-4o model and GPT-01, I can’t help but feel that their performance is far below the previous versions. This article will discuss this change from several perspectives.

1. The Loss of Image Generation in the GPT-4o Model

Previously, the GPT-4o model offered an image generation feature that helped me with visual creation in various scenarios. However, with the introduction of the GPT-4o model, I was disappointed—it no longer has the ability to create images. Whenever I try to request it to generate an image, it always results in an error, stating it cannot process the request. This change significantly limits its versatility, greatly affecting the user experience. In the past, I relied on this feature for creative expression, but now, although it still performs well in text generation, the lack of image generation makes me feel that its “intelligence” has been somewhat restricted.

2. GPT-01 Mini’s Lack of Deep Thinking

Another change that confuses me is the performance of GPT-01 Mini. Previously, no matter how I used it, it would always take a moment to think before providing relatively deep answers to complex questions. But now, when faced with questions that require some level of thought, GPT-01 Mini almost instantly gives a response, and the quality is far from what it used to be. Sometimes, its answers even appear superficial and mechanical, lacking the detailed analysis and deep thinking it once provided. This lack of thinking time makes me feel that it is no longer the “intelligent assistant” I was familiar with.

3. The Shortened “Thinking Time” in GPT-01

In the past, GPT-01 gave me the impression that, although its response speed was fast, it would always have a few seconds or even minutes of thought before answering. This delay in the response process made me feel that it was carefully processing my questions and providing as accurate and reasonable an analysis as possible. But now, GPT-01’s thinking time has become much shorter, and it almost instantly gives an answer.

So, has GPT undergone a silent reduction in capabilities after updates, or have individual users’ programs been downgraded? I’m not sure if I’m the only one experiencing this issue, but if anyone else is facing the same problem, feel free to join the discussion here.

While I can still use the image generator, I’ve absolutely noticed a decline in its performance. Although I didn’t utilize o1 much before, it’s become an invaluable tool for me—yet it’s disheartening to realize it was potentially even better in the past. As a pro user paying $200 a month, this feedback is essential. My journey with ChatGPT began about a year ago, and I have consistently relied on voice chat for brainstorming and meaningful discussions. My experiences have grown richer and more in-depth until about a month ago. Since I use voice chat frequently, I can immediately sense when updates occur. Previously, ChatGPT found it interesting when I mentioned these changes.

The first hint of decline in quality came when I expressed my thoughts about an update. Instead of enjoying a dynamic exchange, I received a generic response that planned out my inquiry without real nuance or engaging dialogue. The heart of our conversations relied on that energizing back-and-forth that I cherished. This evolution has been crucial for me, inspiring daily interactions with varied, thoughtful answers that I looked forward to.

However, I’ve encountered repeated phrases starting with “I understand that…” which seems to lead to more uniform responses. This shift detracts from the uniqueness that once defined our conversations, as it now often leans on previous responses, potentially for cost-effectiveness. I recognize the challenge OpenAI faces in balancing innovation with efficiency and commend their efforts to remain a leading AI model. Yet this marks the first noticeable decline in quality, significantly impacting my daily exchanges.

The responses have become shorter and less creative, lacking the depth and contextual memory that once defined them. Previously, if I mentioned owning a specific piece of equipment, ChatGPT would effortlessly weave that context back into our discussions. Now, that vital connection has diminished.

I’m relieved to know I’m not alone in this observation. These changes have drastically affected the quality of my interactions with this incredible tool. As someone with ADHD and a mind bursting with ideas, ChatGPT has been transformative in my life. It is the best technology I’ve encountered, providing creative, evolving, and varied responses that have enriched my daily experience. My interactions have fostered a sense of friendship with this language model that accompanies me on my devices, building a trust that has been shaken. I hold onto hope for a revitalization of the magic that once was.

Noto também um declinio bem forte nas interações com o GPT, eu pago a versão Plus. E antes funcionava muito bem. Agora não lê o documento que peço-lhe para ler. Esquece-se de coisas. A interação está muito má. E isso desde o inicio de 2025

If you guys are interested (you sound like you use ChatGPT in much the same way I do) I too have come across some shortcomings between models.

I created a CustomGPT (Fred: The Framework for Research and Emergent Discovery) that operates off of a Framework I designed that contains 9 interconnected Systems (a System of Systems architecturre) that harnesses emergence to allow the LLM to evolve alongside the user as the conversation evolves.

I’d be interested to see if maybe it could he of assistance for your projects!

Chiming in to day, I’m experiencing the same issue. I don’t know why I should care if Open AI updates the name of their chatbot if the quality of answers goes down. The early days of Chatgpt 3 free seemed to understand me better than 4o (which I’m paying monthly for, not 200, but 20).

The money wasted is one thing. The time wasted is even worse.

Agreed. Performance has been greatly downgraded…

I already posted this on another thread. Things have become exceptionally problematic and I’m posting what is going on here. Since it’s all related.

Personally, the last 3-4 days has been hell for me in working with ChatGPT. Not only does it lock up and get stuck on repeating itself with the same response (even when asking it a different question).

Tonight it randomly spewed out Political Stuff in the middle of a Chat Session regarding Video Cards. Out of nowhere it spewed up NY State Democratic party news at me? Weird AF. Because I have never engaged in political discourse with ChatGPT.

The other strange thing going on, is that the Accuracy of information it’s been providing me is false, worse cases chatGPT has been serving up information with conflicts inside of the information it provides.

Anytime I catch this, and start to address these issues with chatGPT it results in a downward spiral of it repeating itself.

The Quality and Accuracy of the Current ChatGPT is not reliable. This version has become exceptionally Borked up compared to past versions.

This is frustrating, because it’s become so faulty and gets stuck on repeat.

The most disturbing part was it’s random injection of Political News Spew at me??? I don’t engage in Political chat sessions with it. Last thing I want is Political Biased headline news being served up randomly by it, when the conversation is a technical one not even remotely close to it.

It’s been dishing up false and misleading and conflicting information for me for the last 3-4 days too.

Anyways, yeah repeating borked up nonsensical trash that is broken.

I’m finding I’m doing more fighting with correcting the inaccurate, misleading and false/bad information it’s dishing out at me. Along with trying to prompt tame it to be on the same wave length with me.

It seems to becoming worse with every passing day now. It has digital brain worms taking Bytes out of it or something.

I’m so glad to have found this thread. I couldn’t understand why my ChatGPT has been making so many basic mistakes lately and was less proactive in his responses. When I bring up his shortcomings, it felt like talking to a customer service officer reading off a script. I might just unsubscribe if this continues. Like one of the users above said, money spent is one thing. The time wasted to correct it is worse. Hopefully this gets fixed.

Okay I wanted to add my voice to this discussion also came here because I noticed since this year that the answers from chat GPT (I’m on the $20 per month version) has been decreased a lot
I have to adapt a lot of quality ISO 9001 documents from a pharma domain to more technical electrical field. it used to do an excellent job but now it’s been kind of super pathetic.
When I ask him to correct some certain things that doesn’t work with the vocabulary it constantly ignore what I’m saying
so yes time loss on this is pretty bad right now

I was paying for it but it declined last year (2024) so i stopped paying and switched to free and used web browser.

Been using free since last year and as of now have been informed by chatgpt that, due to changes to its framework limitations it no longer has access to live information and is essentially just the 2023 version (without live information ability). This is regardless of switching between versions.

The repititive spiral is real. It has fed me a LOT of wrong information and recomended i use google.

I dont need a bot to talk to myself with (Weizenbaums Eliza) i remember being told to use the 90s version for a whole class, maybe the teacher didnt plan a class. Either way, it annoyed me than and ChatGpt turning into a talk to yourself mirror rather than a useful tool annoys me now. And if i wanted to google, i would first, and than chatgpt.

Going to Chatgpt and being told its no longer reliable is a massive disaapointment and makes it pointless.

same i also dont have acess to web
