I’ve had a couple of quite long but nice chats with ChatGPT (4o and 4omini) but at some point it seems to suddenly forget about what we were discussing. I’ve tried multiple times with different prompts but it responds as if it were a new conversation. I was able to get back to one chat and try again a day later and it worked. When it happened again in another chat, I asked it what we were previously discussing, and it threw up stuff from a different chat that we had.
Wonder if others are experiencing this issue as well and the part where it gave me stuff from another conversation slightly worries me.
Hello, context windows are limited. Every 20-25 messages stop, and ask GPT to recall everything in conversation and store it to extend conversation memory for this instance. It will understand and know what to do.
Basiclly how it works I believe from my testing, is it remembers the convo word for word until the context window internally is full. It then starts “trimming” and compressing memories based on their weight of importance given when initially stored.
If you would like KEY topics stored in a chat, tell it… Say “This chat is mainly about my startup, can you please recall all startup related context you have” It will then list everything… Then prompt “Great, now can you tag these as critical concepts for this chat instance and remember them.”
Do this every once in awhile and I almost guarantee it will reduce this issue for you !
