ChatGPT stopping responses as soon as they're set and separating chats into multiple

I don’t even know where to begin with this one.

So, essentially, I’ve recently been experiencing issues where, upon my first time sending a prompt, it immediately cancels, as if I pressed the “stop” button. I tried to troubleshoot by creating a new chat and trying to figure it out there, but that’s when things started to get really strange.

The first prompt stopped instantly, as to be expected. But when I told ChatGPT that that was what has been happening, it acted confused, as if I hadn’t posted the first prompt. I tried to talk with it a little more, until I noticed that suddenly there are now three new chats that I don’t remember opening. In one of them was my original prompt with a response, one of them was the second prompt, and the third was the rest of the conversation.

So I tried to open another chat. After telling it the problem, I immediately checked my chats. Sure enough, there are two chats instead of one, one with my original prompt and one with the rest of the conversation afterwards.

I’m honestly scared. I’ve never encountered anything like this within the year and a half that I’ve been using ChatGPT. Has anyone been experiencing similar issues, and if not, do you know what might be causing this?

I’ve also started running into this! It’s quite bizarre, and only started happening today for me; it was working fine yesterday.

Great catch about the original message showing up in a different chat. I thought it might be issue with Firefox Nightly for Android (which is what I’m using), but I’m not sure what your setup looks like.

Here’s an example of what’s happening for me. When I send a message, it appears that I get a blank response:

Then I can do one of two things: press the little “redo” arrow circle and choose the same model, and in that case it appears to work, with the second message coming through okay. (I tried to upload a screenshot here but apparently new users are only allowed to upload 1 image at a time, so guess I can only provide context for one action…)

But if I do that, it turns out that a second conversation will have been created and that’s the one that I see in the above.

The second option I have is reloading the page after receiving the “blank” reply and selecting the conversation from the sidebar. Then the message is actually visible.

It looks like I have to reload after every message I send however. I have a feeling that it’s related to the new changes they started rolling out yesterday (Nov 22nd).

Hopefully they’re able to fix it soon! The Android app does work for now, but I don’t like it as much as the mobile web experience - the app doesn’t let you cycle between messages you’ve edited or regenerated, and for some reason the app murders my Pixel 7 Pro’s battery life.

Same here, i normally have to edit then select all, copy and then refresh the page and it will work the second time
