ChatGPT can’t give me a timeframe properly

I just noticed there’s no real time clock in ChatGPT. When I ask it how much longer on a task, it always gives me a nonsense time. Once it said 30-45 seconds. I went back on the app 3 hours later and it still said under a minute with nothing to show for it until now, 2 days later, with very minimal information. Please mind I’m asking it to create a course to help me study for another course I’m taking in April so I know it needs time to create the proper formats and such. Would just be nice to know exactly how much time is remaining on what I’m asking.

Hey, welcome to the community!

ChatGPT doesn’t actually keep track of time or how far it’s gotten with a task. When it says something like “30–45 seconds left,” it’s just making a guess. It doesn’t really know how long you’ve been gone or if the task is still going, because it can’t tell time or work in the background.

Sometimes it tries to sound like a person, or it might even make stuff up.

If it says something like that, it’s better to just start a new chat. Also, try not to ask “how long will this take?” because it usually gives a fake time just to sound helpful.

Instead, just tell it clearly with directives what you want like “make a course” or “do this step next.”

If you have a Plus or Pro account, try using the o3 model to make your course.

You can also try using the “Deep Research” feature for better results.
