I would like the desktop app to have a functionality that allows the use of CMD/CTRL + Return/Enter to send the text. Additionally, like Slack, I would like to be able to toggle off/on the ability to not submit on Enter, but rather add a newline.
When providing code or other multi-line information, it is frustrating to use SHIFT+Return to insert a new line—which, if missed, will submit incomplete information.
I’d love to echo a feature request many of us have: a toggle in the ChatGPT app settings to switch how the Enter key behaves. I’m using the macOS app, and it would be really helpful if:
Pressing Enter inserted a new line instead of sending the message.
Pressing Cmd+Enter (on macOS) or Ctrl+Enter (on other platforms) sent the message.
Why this matters:
I often compose longer or multi-paragraph messages. Accidentally sending mid-draft with Enter can interrupt my workflow and lead to fragmented prompts or losing track of my phrasing.
Many text-editing environments (like writing in Markdown editors, Slack, Google Docs, etc.) use Enter for new lines and require a separate action to send or publish. Having this behavior in ChatGPT would align with user expectations.
It’d be particularly helpful when writing code, emails, step-by-step instructions, or structured prompts that benefit from deliberate formatting.
Given the number of users chiming in—see for example:
“Request for ‘Enter Key Behavior’ Setting in ChatGPT”
“Toggle for ‘Enter to Send’ vs. ‘Enter for New Line’”
“Allow toggle newlines and CMD/CTRL + Return/Enter for submission”
…it seems this is a feature that could help a lot of people.
Even this text input/editor I using to write this message uses Enter for new line.
This issue is not a feature request—it’s effectively a bug report. The current behavior directly undermines the usability of the ChatGPT desktop app for all CJK users.
CJK typing requires character conversion and confirmation with the Enter key, which is an essential part of the input method. When the app treats Enter exclusively as “send,” it causes a large number of unintended prompt submissions. This is not merely inconvenient; it also generates unnecessary server load due to rapid cancellations and re-sends that users are forced to make.
Supporting an alternative send method would immediately reduce these accidental submissions and significantly improve both usability and system efficiency.
Please, please do this. Whenever I fat-finger the enter key on a complex web page I get stuck waiting for ChatGPT to respond to the “Stop” button so I can keep typing. This setting is super common on chat apps like Slack.
I think it should also be in web version and in all other operating systems.
Bc many people usually send non-finished messages bc forgot or failed to press “shift” with enter.
I agree, this functionality to toggle what the Enter key does by default would be very helpful! I mistakenly send fragments in error all the time while sending conversation messages. With the toggle changed to CR, I can just use the up arrow to submit.
I am pretty sure that this wastes a lot of ressources because users send the prompt too early, I asked around, this happens to all. So AI starts answering and wastes ressources for something of no or minimal use. Some users stop it with another request to let it know that the request was not finished. Wastes some more ressources.
