ChatGPT Android: "Error in Message Stream" Interrupts Long Conversations

I’m reporting another occurrence of the “Error in message stream” issue in ChatGPT on Android.

I found an existing Community discussion about this error, but the thread is locked and I cannot select “Me Too.” I’m opening this report to document my own experience and provide additional technical details.

DEVICE AND APP DETAILS

Device: Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra
Operating system: Android 16
ChatGPT version: 1.2026.258
App updated: September 19, 2026
Incident date: September 22, 2026

WHAT HAPPENED

While using a long-running ChatGPT conversation for analyzing and reporting suspicious emails, I submitted a message containing a text-file attachment (rawMessage.txt) and a screenshot.

ChatGPT began processing my request and displayed “Thinking,” but instead of completing the requested analysis, it stopped and displayed:

“Error in message stream”

This interrupted my ongoing workflow and left the task unfinished.

EXPECTED BEHAVIOR

ChatGPT should complete the response or provide a reliable recovery option without forcing users to abandon an established conversation.

ACTUAL BEHAVIOR

The response stopped unexpectedly with “Error in message stream.”

I have not established whether the failure is related to the conversation length, attachments, network connection, or another cause.

SUPPORT STATUS

I have already reported this issue to OpenAI Support and successfully requested escalation to a support specialist.

I’m posting here because other users have reported similar errors, and the existing discussion I found is locked. I was unable to use the “Me Too” option.

I would appreciate an investigation into these interruptions and improved recovery options for long-running conversations, particularly when users are working with important files and accumulated context.

Has anyone else experienced this error on the Android app, particularly in long conversations involving attachments?

Thank you.

This also happens on web and the desktop apps

UPDATE — SEPTEMBER 24, 2026: REPEATED FAILURES AND REQUEST FOR INVESTIGATION

I am following up on my original September 22 report because the “Error in message stream” problem is continuing to interrupt my work.

I have encountered additional failures involving prolonged “Reviewing the request” states, loading that does not complete, and another message stream error.

My environment:
Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra
Android 16
Last verified ChatGPT version: 1.2026.258

These interruptions have affected long-running conversations involving attachments and ongoing projects.

I have already reported the issue to OpenAI Support and requested escalation to a human support specialist. I have supplied screenshots and additional diagnostic information.

Another member has also reported encountering this error on web and desktop. Although the underlying cause may differ, this deserves investigation beyond an individual Android device.

Repeatedly starting new conversations is not an adequate long-term solution for users whose conversations contain extensive troubleshooting histories, uploaded files, decisions, and ongoing work.

I am requesting that OpenAI:

  1. Investigate the recurring message stream failures and prolonged loading states.

  2. Determine whether conversation length, attachments, response streaming, or service-side issues contribute to these failures.

  3. Introduce reliable error recovery so interrupted responses can be resumed without losing important conversation context.

  4. Provide clearer information when a response fails, rather than leaving users repeatedly attempting the same task.

  5. Communicate any confirmed cause, available workaround, or planned fix.

As someone who has paid for ChatGPT and relies on it for substantial ongoing tasks, I find these repeated interruptions unacceptable.

I would appreciate a substantive response from the appropriate OpenAI technical team. This report is intended to help document and resolve the problem, not merely to repeat a complaint.

Thank you.

They are getting ready to combine chat and work limits together during the next devday offloading any heavy jobs to metered work mode to save compute so you get what you pay for not unlimited like chat is now

imageConfirming it’s happening on the desktop app again, this is ridiculous. It was fine last night.

Thank you for confirming that you’re experiencing this on the desktop app as well and for providing additional screenshot evidence. I appreciate you taking the time to document it.

I’ve already escalated my recurring Android errors to OpenAI Support. Hopefully, these reports will help the technical team investigate the interruptions across platforms and develop a lasting fix.

ADDITIONAL FAILURE — SEPTEMBER 25, 2026

Unfortunately, I experienced another interruption during my ongoing spam-reporting work.

This time, the ChatGPT Android application became unresponsive while displaying “Reporting in progress.” Android presented the system dialog “ChatGPT isn’t responding,” with options to close the app or wait.

My screenshot shows that ChatGPT had worked for 1 minute and 12 seconds.

This follows my previously documented message-stream errors on September 22 and September 24.

I cannot confirm whether these failures share the same underlying cause, but the repeated interruptions are affecting my ability to complete ongoing work.

I have escalated the earlier failures to OpenAI Support and am submitting this incident as additional evidence.

Please investigate these application freezes alongside the recurring response-streaming failures and improve recovery from interrupted tasks.

Screenshot attached.

same here, same error, its persistent. someone at @OpenAI_Support could you update us on this? is there a fix on the way considering its an old issue already repeating it self?

same problem here “Error in message stream”

Same issue here. Not an extended chat, a large file, or an unstable internet connection. Seems like their servers might be overloaded.

ADDITIONAL EVIDENCE: SAMSUNG DEVICE CARE DETECTS FREQUENT CHATGPT CRASHES

I have further evidence of the recurring problems I’ve been reporting.

My Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra has now displayed an official Device Care notification stating:

“ChatGPT is crashing frequently. Put it in deep sleep to keep your phone running smoothly.”

This follows my previous reports of:
• Repeated “Error in message stream” failures.
• Prolonged “Reviewing the request” states.
• The Android application becoming unresponsive during my ongoing spam-reporting workflow.
• Android displaying the “ChatGPT isn’t responding” system dialog.

Device: Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra
Operating system: Android 16
Last verified ChatGPT app version: 1.2026.258

This latest notification adds device-generated evidence that ChatGPT is experiencing recurring stability problems, beyond the individual errors I’ve documented in screenshots.

I have already escalated these issues to OpenAI Support and requested a technical investigation.

I am asking OpenAI to investigate the recurring Android crashes, freezes and message-stream errors, determine whether they are related, and provide a reliable fix.

Putting ChatGPT into deep sleep is not an adequate solution for someone who relies on the application for ongoing work and notifications.

Please also provide an update on any confirmed causes, fixes or workarounds.

I’ve attached the Samsung Device Care notification as additional evidence.

Thank you.

ADDITIONAL EVIDENCE — ANDROID DISPLAY PROBLEM CONFIRMED THROUGH BROWSER COMPARISON

I have discovered another problem affecting my ongoing ChatGPT Android workflow.

A response containing lengthy email-reporting content displayed an enormous, completely empty gap between sections of the conversation.

I performed the following tests:

  1. Closed and relaunched the ChatGPT Android application.
Result: The enormous blank gap remained.

  2. Reopened the same conversation in Firefox on the same phone.
Result: The response displayed normally, without the gap.

Device: Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra
Operating system: Android 16
Last verified ChatGPT version: 1.2026.258

These results suggest an Android app-specific rendering or layout problem.

I cannot confirm whether this issue is related to the recurring message-stream errors, application freezes and crashes reported earlier in this thread.

I have submitted the findings and three supporting screenshots to my existing escalated OpenAI Support case.

Please investigate this additional problem alongside the previously reported stability issues. These interruptions are significantly affecting my ongoing workflows.

Thank you.

UPDATE: Samsung Device Care Reports More Than 10 ChatGPT Crashes in One Week

I have discovered additional evidence concerning the recurring ChatGPT Android stability problems I’ve been reporting.

Samsung Device Care on my Galaxy S24 Ultra now explicitly states:

“This app crashed more than 10 times in the past week.”

This is particularly concerning because I’ve also experienced repeated “Error in message stream” failures, application freezes, and interruptions during lengthy, ongoing workflows.

My device’s September 25 usage statistics show:

• Total ChatGPT usage: 2 hours, 28 minutes
• Screen-on usage: 2 hours, 2 minutes
• Background usage: 26 minutes
• CPU usage: 1 hour, 5 minutes

Device: Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra
Operating system: Android 16
Last verified ChatGPT version: 1.2026.258

Samsung is recommending that I put ChatGPT into deep sleep because of the repeated crashes. However, that would interfere with background activity and potentially delay important notifications.

I cannot confirm whether these crashes and the recurring message-stream errors have the same underlying cause, but the frequency and disruption are concerning.

I hope OpenAI investigates these stability problems and provides a reliable fix rather than leaving users to repeatedly restart the application or abandon lengthy conversations.

Has anyone else received a Samsung Device Care warning reporting frequent ChatGPT crashes? If so, which device, Android version, and ChatGPT app version are you using?

I’ve attached screenshots of the crash warning and device usage statistics.

Thank you to everyone who has shared their experiences in this thread.

It’s the same in ChatGPT Web.
