ChatGPT 4 is completely broken for coding for days now

Hi there,

Just some feedback from someone who has been using ChatGPT and the API since early 2023.

I mostly use ChatGPT to write boilerplate code, regex, and help troubleshoot general programming bugs.

I’ve noticed ChatGPT have intermittent bugs and weird behaviour over the past few months but I’ve been able to work through them. In the past few days, however, it has been completely broken for my programming-related use cases. It just doesn’t work.

A few days ago it started tripping up on some C# code. It would just cut itself off halfway through a code block and then repeat itself over and over again until I interrupted it. I tried starting a new conversation, clearing cache, deleting chat history, nothing helped it just continued to have the same issue:

I thought perhaps it was an isolated case and I ended up working through the code on my own.

The next day I was trying to get it to output a boiler plate React context for a prototype I was working on (this is something it has easily done for me on countless of my projects before.)

Same problem:

{Redacted: apparently as a new user I’m only allowed one image in the post, I’ll try and put it in the comments.}

Today I was just trying to get it to write some regex for me, and it started outputting incomplete, weirdly formatted answers that were semi-related to what I asked for:

{Redacted: will try and put it in the comments.}

Not as bad as the previous bugs, but it still failed on something that it used to be able to do well.

These are just a few examples from the past few days, but to be honest the bugginess of the app has been annoying me for a couple months now. I remember last month having issues where my chat history would just randomly disappear or days where I couldn’t access GPT 4 for some unexplained reason.

ChatGPT used to help me get ahead with my prototypes and side projects - it was like a helpful little assistant saving me hours of coding time per week. I think it’s now at the point where it’s actually costing me hours… on top of the $30 AUD I’m spending on it per month - just doesn’t seem worth it.

I’ll probably be cancelling my subscription at the end of this period if I don’t see any improvements but i’m really hoping I don’t have to!

Kind regards,
Stephen

Here’s the last example:

I have the same problem. Some keep breaking at the exact same point again and again.

this has been happening all day for me too :frowning: this is very annoying, it keeps breaking on the word “list”

Completely same situation, with both version

I’m having the same problem. It always breaks down from the same word.

Unfortunately, I have the same problem. Do they know about it? :frowning:

Same here since Friday morning! My guess is they are implementing some big release, I did start noticing some new features pop up. It’s also a problem for me as it is not functional whatsoever for programming tasks. I get these things happen but, it would help if they could notify us when they are performing big changes, or that they have recognized the issue, which I’m sure they have… pretty obvious.

First, great job to Google for surfacing this in the top results. Registered to say that I’m experiencing the same thing. It seems like it just got sloppier. Leaves out critical functionality. When asking to refactor one section the function returned includes older iterations of other pieces of code. Feels like GPT just partied too hard last night and now has a hangover.

Update: Some other users have discovered that ChatGPT is struggling to output ‘<’ and ‘>’ - it seems the response usually goes off the rails after trying to output one of these characters, which would fit with all three of my examples. They have suggested prompting ChatGPT to replace all angle brackets with a substitute character for the time being but this is an awful workaround.

My personal suggestion, after playing around with a few other AI assistant tools last night, is to go use claude.ai for the time being - the free tier performs exceptionally well at general programming tasks, I’m very happy with it so far.

I’ve been using ChatGPT for coding for quite some time and for a couple of days I’d say it’s not usable at all. Even ChatGPT 3.5 was better than the responses that 4 returns now. It’s awful.

Similar issues the last two days, very strange answers and a Grammarly logo covers the posting. I have also tried to change my billing and I am unable to get into my account. Is AI over thinking the simple issues of life?
