If this were my problem I would view it as a constraint satisfaction problem.

As much as we would like an LLM such as GPT-3, GPT-4 ChatGPT, etc. to be able to accept the problem described in English and produce the correct result I have found that expecting this of the models is not always achievable.

Personally I find faster and more deterministic results having the LLM create programming code to solve the problem. As I use Prolog daily and these LLMs have a limited ability to craft Prolog code with constraints that is something I would try but I also know from having tried similar that one needs to know how to create the Prolog code based on knowing how to code in Prolog so that one can spot and fix the errors made by the generated code. So while this is not an answer I would expect anyone to pursue it should give you an idea that perhaps creating a custom GPT with code generation might work.

For the LLM issue, could one craft a number of sort and join rules to better structure the constraints and then iterate somehow?

I don’t know. I tend to think of doing that as something that is less likely to get my desired results and often find a better means before going down such a path.

I’ll save you the headaches and suggest that unless you are a programmer with a degree, or with a few years experience or have someone to mentor you on this it is not a path to take. I only noted it for others that would read this.

You may find the Chain of Thought prompting is enough to improve your results. I don’t plan to check it out for your case but if I were tutoring someone would take the time.
